By the time I got back home after school that day, the evening was crawling in. I had to convince Dmitri not to let Mikhail know when exactly I got home. That soldier always loved running his mouth to his Pakhan about every little thing I did. If Mikhail knew I skipped school but instead of coming home, I went to a boy's house(Shiro's), he might just fly back to Russia to put one or two bullets on someone's head. Hopefully, not anyone I cared about.

Anyway, I was a bit hungry on getting home because Shiro wasn't a great host. Recalling the leftover pizza I had spotted in the refrigerator earlier in the morning while searching for an apple for the road, I figured if it was still there, I could heat it and feast on it. But on reaching the kitchen and attempting to push the door open, I found myself pausing my actions due to the noises coming from behind the door.

Pressing my ear against the wooden door, I recognized one of the voices as Riccardo's. The other was a woman's voice and that left me rooted to the spot because I needed to figure out how a woman snuck into this house, or how Riccardo knew the person.

"You have to come back to Italy when Mikhail is back, I'm being very serious, Riccardo." The woman's voice came through. It wasn't exactly commanding, nor was it a form of request either. It did sound urgent.

"Why all of a sudden?" Riccardo demanded, his voice lazy as always, "I mean, you were so excited sending me off to your brother's the last time I checked."

"Oh please don't act like the reason I did it wasn't to protect you." I could hear the woman scoff, "You were weak, Riccardo Gambino. You were a fucking little Sardine in the ocean of Sharks. Sharks that happen to be your father's greedy and envious brothers, in case you are confused. I needed an iron fist to train you to be a better leader for the mafia." She paused as if to sip on something, perhaps water or a glass of juice, "And I looked far and beyond and the only option I have is my heartless younger brother. He was the only one that could train you to be a better leader for your familial."

"Whatever but what I'm telling you, Alyona Gambino is that I can't just pack up and go now just because you want it that way," Riccardo said.

Alyona Gambino. Why didn't this click sooner that I was currently overhearing the voice of Mikhail's sister?

"But why?" Alyona demanded, perplexed and a little enraged, "You have been here for months! You have trained enough so what's stopping you from returning to your home? Your father's land?"

"I'm in the middle of a mission, Mom!" He spat and though the voice wasn't directed at me, I jumped away from the door at first.

I had been living with Riccardo for months and I had witnessed him get angry or express anger with the other soldiers and even Mikhail. I had annoyed him many times, pushed his buttons so hard but I had never heard him use that voice on me or anyone else.
