Chapter 48

Lan Xichen entered the guest room later on that evening. Wei Wuxian was passed out on the bed but Wangji was awake. He was sitting on the bed beside him. Lan Xichen could see the concern in his brother's eyes. Lan Xichen was quite taken back by the information he received today. He was also furious. Jiang Fengmian was there when Wei Wuxian's parents died and even promised to take care of him and protect him. He failed at that promise by letting Yu Ziyuan abuse Wuxian all those years.

"Xiongzhang," Wangji said.

Lan Xichen looked at Wangji which brought him out of his train of thought, "What is it?" He asked.

"I don't think I want Sect Leader Jiang near Wei Ying unless Wei Ying says it's okay," Wangji said, "Wei Ying was in severe distress after hearing about his parents. He was even more upset that Sect Leader Jiang let him be abused for so long."

"I was just thinking that same thing," Xichen said as he sat at the table, "since we got out what we needed, we can head home tomorrow. I'm sure A'Xian needs some time to recover from this ordeal."

Lan Wangji nodded and looked at Wuxian who was sleeping beside him. Wei Wuxian silently groaned in his sleep and nuzzled closer to Wangji as if he was needing more body contact. Lan Wangji started to ring his fingers through Wuxian's hair. Wuxian slightly moved his head as if he was moving more into Wangji's touch.

Lan Xichen was watching from afar. He has seen his brother a few times care for Wuxian in such a way and each time it surprises him more. He remembered when Wangji used to avoid physical contact with anyone and now he was soothing Wuxian like it was he was a natural born talent at it. Back when they were in hiding, he witnessed his brother being affectionate like this and it made him feel happy that Wangji finally has someone who he is willing to be more open with.

Lan Xichen let the two be for now and went to get ready for bed. When he returned, Wangji had already changed from sitting up in bed to laying down and holding Wei Wuxian in his arms. After the day everyone had, Lan Xichen wanted to make sure that Wuxian and Wangji were safe. He was going to try and get some more information. He wasn't necessarily thrilled about talking to Sect Leader Jiang but he needed answers. If he promised Cangse that he would protect and take care of Wei Wuxian, why did he allow for Wuxian to get abused by Yu Ziyuan? He wanted to asked that, as he was sure Cangse was tossing and turning in her grave in anger. Lan Xichen would do the same, including his brother.

When morning came, Wei Wuxian was the last to wake up. It was nothing new though as he was a man who could sleep for hours if anyone let him. After the fiasco from the meeting, Wangji thought Wuxian could use the extra sleep anyway. He had a bath and breakfast prepared for him for when he woke up. He had a heating talisman both on the tub to keep the water from getting cold and also on the food to keep it fresh and warm.

Lan Xichen was the first to wake. After getting freshened up and dressed, he meditated for a bit that morning. Wangji woke soon after. It took a moment for him to pry himself out of Wei Wuxian's tight grip and get up and ready for the day. As Wangji stood up, he could already hear Wuxian whimpering in his sleep because of the loss of contact between him and Wangji and he gripped Wangji's night robes to keep him from leaving.

Wangji smiled and leaned down to speak something softly to him, "go back to sleep. I will be right back. I promise," he then placed a kiss on Wuxian's cheek and it seemed to have done the trick. Wei Wuxian let him go and he rolled over to his back and his lip popped out as if he was pouting. Lan Wangji cooed at the sight and covered him with the blanket before going to bathe and dress for the day.

Lan Xichen's meditation was disturbed by Wei Wuxian's protests and it had him feeling concerned. When Xichen opened his eyes, he witnessed the whole scene unfold. He watched his brother walk away to the bathroom and looked back at Wuxian. Xichen could see the pouting sleeping figure from across the room. He couldn't help but laugh slightly. He had to admit the sight was too cute to handle.

When Wangji returned, Xichen couldn't help but make a comment, "he really likes being babied by you, doesn't he?"

Wangji glanced at his brother and then at Wuxian, "I do not mind," he said, "I think I'm the only one who really spoils him to this extent anyway."

"I am not complaining, I just find it very intriguing to watch," Xichen said, "even in his sleep he doesn't like being away from you."

Wangji smiled and sat down on the bed beside Wuxian, which got Wuxian's attention and he immediately moved to Wangji's side, "he really is shameless but only to me has he been this way," he said.

Lan Xichen nodded and let out a sigh, "I want to let you know what I am going doing later," he said. It got Wangji's attention. Lan Xichen explained, "I do not want to but I need to. I am sure A'Xian would also like some answers. I am going to go speak with Sect Leader Jiang shortly before he heads out. We all want some answers and I'm sure it would be nice to understand more about this situation."

Wangji nodded, "I understand," he said, "I also want some answers. He said he promised Wei Ying's mother to protect him and care for him, but he allowed his wife to torture Wei Ying for all those years. I feel like he kept half of his promise by taking him in but he broke the other half by not keeping him safe."

"That is why I want to get some answers," Xichen said, "you two are marrying in several months and I don't want this issue to get out of hand and cause it to overshadow it. It needs to be handled now before it gets to a point where it really messes with A'Xian's head."

"I appreciate you doing this, and I'm sure Wei Ying will too," Wangji told him.

"I will get you some answers, Wangji," Xichen promised him.
