CHAPTER 2.85

The smoky figure's voice echoed, "So, the royal family knows of our plans. How amusing that you think you can interfere."

The smoky figure's added as it echoed, dripping with mocking confidence, "Surely, you're not also foolish enough to think that your blades could harm me. Even if you use magic, it still won't be affected. After all this is just a clone. And if you're planning on looking for my real body, then it's impossible."

Paladin, Asher, and the others stayed silent, hands still on their weapons.

'He is right, any attempt to strike the figure would be futile.'

The earlier attack had passed right through, and even Asher's finely honed skills were useless against something that wasn't truly there.

And if magic doesn't work too, then they can't do anything with it either.

Surely enough, planning to find his body then what he meant will be he isn't in the academy but in a far away place.

Not his true form but was a clone. A smoke magic that is created with such skill to such an extent that it traveled this far undetected. And if he can do this, then he could be anywhere. Whoever he is, he's powerful and well-practiced.

Then the figure's eyes glinted with anger as he figured out something, "Was it the royal family? Who stole the fragment from us that day?"

"..." The knights were confused. Talking to themselves what fragment he was talking about.

Paladin and Asher exchanged glances, their expressions darkening. They knew exactly what the smoky figure was talking about. The very fragment that the Black Star has been looking for. But got stolen a fragment from them-The royal family didn't take it, but a neighbor did it.

As the smoky figure observed the confusion among the knights, let out a voice of frustration, "Are you seriously telling me... you're clueless? Just mindless pawns assigned to guard something without even knowing what's at stake. How predictable."

Asher's hand tightened around the hilt of his blade. Before Asher could speak, Paladin's voice cut through the heavy air. "You've made a mistake. Whatever your organization lost, it has nothing to do with us. Our duty is to protect this place, and nothing more."

The smoky figure sneered, its form swirling violently as though barely containing its fury. "Lies will not protect you when the truth comes to light. The fragment was stolen from under our noses, and you dare claim ignorance? If not the royal family, then who else?"

Paladin held his ground, but Asher stepped forward, his sharp gaze meeting the figure's glowing eyes.

"You seem to be under the impression that we're part of some grand scheme. Let me make one thing clear: our mission is to keep this place secure. We don't care about your petty grievances or your failure to protect what's yours."

The smoky figure's form seemed to hesitate, as though considering Asher's words. Then its voice shifted, quieter but no less threatening. "Perhaps you truly don't know. But that will not save you. When the Black Star retrieves what is rightfully ours, your kingdom-no, your entire realm-will burn."

With that, the figure began to dissolve, the smoky tendrils curling into nothingness. But before it disappeared completely, its voice echoed once more.

"This mission is a failure and to think you also surrounded the area where the fragment should be. Doesn't matter, I do not think this is the end... I hope those students above can survive."

At the end of his sentence he smirked and Paladin's face pale with realization. The smoky figure vanished completely, leaving an ominous silence in its wake.
