AHANA

(A day after I returned to Toronto)

"Good morning, Mr and Mrs Mehta," I greeted my Uncle and Aunt Fatso as I made my way towards the dining table for breakfast.

A slight frown etched on their faces. Mr Mehta nodded in response. "Morning?" Mrs Mehta said with uncertainty in her voice. She arranged the plates on the table. "Bring me the salt *beta (child)."

"Okay," I said quietly and went to the kitchen. On my way, I met Nikki- Mehta's daughter and greeted her morning as well.

I came back bringing what Aunt Fatso requested me to, but instead, I was welcomed with a look of disappreciation. "No beta. I told you to bring spoons, not salt. And you bought a whole can. We don't need that much of salt," she said while placing a hand over her forehead. She shook her head in disbelief while Nikki giggled besides me. "I shouldn't have asked you. Ah, I'll bring it myself," she mumbled getting up from the seat while I watched her back puzzled.

Eh, but I clearly remember her telling me to bring salt. Well, whatever.

We sat together on the table eating upma. The Mehta's asked me about the trip and I answered it was great. They resigned to talk amongst themselves while I was struggling to eat my fill. For some reason, I wasn't hungry even though my stomach was feeling funny. One of the complexities of Human body.

I forced a few more bites of upma into my mouth until I could eat no more. I apologized Aunt Fatso for the same and excused myself for college before she starts to lecture me. I fetched my handbag and headed towards the door.

"Bye, bye, didi (big sister)," Nikki, said cheerfully while waving her hand at me.

Guess I should wish her. "Good morning Nikki and yeah, goodbye too," I said simply. I expected her to smile back but instead, she widened her eyes at me like she saw a ghost.
Along with Mr and Mrs Mehta who looked at me, stunned.

"Good morning Liz," I greeted her in class but instead of wishing me back, she blinked like I said something offensive. I felt as if a vein had popped in my brain. I couldn't bear it anymore.

"What is wrong with everyone today? Is wishing good morning that unnatural? I thought it was suppose to count as good manners," I snapped. First it was the Mehtas and now my classmates. What has this world come up to?

Lisa giggled. "Um, that's fine Ahana. Except you have already wished me three times before. It's like someone has embedded a machine into you that is programmed to say good morning," She said shooting a pitiful smile, trying not to sound rude.
