Proud To Be Me

I walk down the street,
And am blinded by the haze,
Of makeup, bones and scars.
I can't see anything through the slits in your mask,
How did the world come to this?
I know the answer;
You showed up.
Tell me, how can one define 'beauty'?
Because it sure as Hell isn't your definition.
You try to convince the world,
That there's only one right way.
The only correct answer,
Is to starve, cut, and cover up.
To hide one's perfect imperfections,
Because they're not your definition of 'normal'.
You push me down,
Just so you can swoop in,
And be the hero you pretend to be.
But what if I could see behind,
Your superfluous mask?
Have you looked in the mirror?
The one that shows the inside,
Instead of the biased outer shell.
Call me cliche,
But that's what really matters.
I think it'll give you the wake up call you need.
Calling people ugly,
Does not make you pretty.
A/N: So today I was on Quotev doing some quizzes (cos why not) and there was this one called 'Are You Beautiful?' I did it out of curiosity, and when it came to the answer, it said that I answered 15 out of 18 questions correctly. THAT JUST ABSOLUTELY OUTRAGED ME!!! IS IT ME OR IS THAT MESSED UP?!?!? THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS 'CORRECT' BEAUTY, EVERYONE IS BEAUTIFUL IN THEIR OWN UNIQUE, IMPERFECT, GORGEOUS WAY!!! PLEASE DON'T LET ANYONE (especially yourself) TELL YOU OTHERWISE!!!!
Okay, rant over (not really, but at least I've stopped using caps lock). I'm still not sure how I was able to channel my rage into a poem. I am just so angry right now! I cannot stress the importance of positive body image and self empowerment. We need to spread this message, people. Please help me get the word out.
