Time: Halloween 2016

"This Is Halloween, This is Halloween,

Pumpkins scream in the dead of night,

This is Halloween, everybody make a scene

Trick or treat 'till the neighbors come and die of fright

It's our town, everybody scream

In this town of Halloween" I sing in an obnoxious voice, jumping around Javi and I's house, with Fuzzy Peaches spilling out of my mouth

Yes, the time has come for Halloween. The time of year where people of all ages put effort into being scary and dressing up.

Get this? I was able to convince the boys to coordinate costumes with me.

Figure skaters

Genius right?

"Charlie-san, I don't think people will know we're figure skaters. We're not even wearing skates" Yuzu says.

"Who cares? I love my new free program dress!" I shout, laughing as I shove more candy into my mouth.

The three of us weren't trick-or-treating or anything, but we were going to hand out candy to the kids.

In the mean time, I convinced Javi to pull up Netflix so the three of us could watch the best movie of all time.

The Nightmare before Christmas.

We were even able to pull up Japanese subtitles for Yuzu too.

"I don't get the point of this movie. Why does Jack Skellington want to rule Christmas? He's already got Halloween" Javi questions

"Just watch the damn movie Javi!" I shout

Beep!

"Is that your phone Charlie?" Yuzu asks with worry lacing his voice

I reach over to the coffee table and surely enough, it's a message from him.

"WHY CAN'T YOU JUST LEAVE ME ALONE!" I shout

"What did he say?" Yuzu asks pulling my phone from my hands

"....oh...he's watching us?"

"HE'S WHAT!" Javi shouts, jumping over to snatching the phone from Yuzu

Suddenly the feeling in the air got eery.

We're being watched.

Ding dong!

"He's here isn't he?" Yuzu asks quietly

"Quick, get the lights!" I whisper back

Javi jumps over the couch and hits the lights in the hallway, making sure to sprint back to us on the couch.

The three of us get under the blankets and huddle on the couch together.

"Guys...I'm really scared" I whisper

"I don't blame you chicken" Javi whispers back

Ding dong!

Knock knock knock

"Should we check?" Yuzu asks

"I'm not going!" Javi says

"Me neither!" I add, counting myself out

That leaves Yuzu.

"I guess I'll go" Yuzu sighs and gets out from under the blanket

Oh no

What if Romano is out there?

"Yuzu wait!" I shout, bolting from the sofa

It's probably better if we go together.

Once we're at the door, I reach my hand out turning the knob slowly.

"TRICK OR TREAT!"

I feel a huge weight being lifted off my shoulders as I see a group of kids dressed in costumes.

"Hi! Happy Halloween guys" I greet, taking the bowl of candy from the table near the front

I get a chorus of thank you's from the first few kids until I hand some to the last one.

"You guys are cute. Is he your boyfriend?" says the little girl dressed as a princess

"Uhh .. sure" I say not really knowing how to reply

Once all the trick or treaters are gone, we return to the couch and resume the movie.

"Just some kids?" Javi asks peeping out from the blanket

"Yeah don't worry Javi, no signs of Romano" I say

But I guess I spoke too soon.

Ding dong

"I'll get it" I say, getting up from the seat once again.

"Happy Hall-...umm hello?" I say looking out to the empty street

Strange.

Maybe this is a trick? I mean it is an option when you say "Trick OR Treat"

My eyes scan the streets and it seems like the last of the trick or treaters are finishing up for the night.

Then who rang the doorbell?

My eyes glance around for a bit longer until I see a large box sitting on the doormat.

Is this another one of his "gifts"?

"Guys...I think we got a problem" I say, carrying the box into the house.

"Another gift?" Javi questions

Yuzu rushes over to the phone desk and grabs the package cutter, handing it to me.

"I'm really not excited about this.." I say as I pop the knife open and dragging it across the tape

I unfold the lid and look inside.

"Oh my god...is that.." Javi starts while Yuzu shields his eyes and looks away

"It is" I say in a blank tone, feeling hot tears rush from my eyes

Inside the box lays something right out of a nightmare.

The heads of my parents.

Their eyes and mouths are sown shut and you can see the purple and green bruises surrounding their cheeks.

I raise a shaky hand and reach into the box.

Surely enough, there's a note inside
