The Surprise

"By the way Charlie, thanks for taking my car the other day. Really, I had a blast taking the bus to the rink" Javi jokes as I step onto the ice 

"No problem Javi. I know you love taking public transit anyways" I laugh 

"You went to Hanyu's house didn't you?" 

"Pshhh no of course not" I say sarcastically 

"Sure you didn't. So are you gonna perform your live piece at the rink?" he asks, skating laps around the rink along side me

"I still need to run the idea over with Coach, but Yuzu said he was willing to skate for me" I tell him

"He's always skating for you Charlie. I think you're one of the reasons he's been medaling" 

"Oh come it's Yuzuru we're talking about here. He always medals" 

"I didn't know you guys gossiped about me" Yuzu says sarcastically skating up behind us

"All good thing Citrus Fruit" I say in a baby voice squeezing his unbelievably squishy cheeks, making him pull a chipmunk face

The three of us continue warming up together, mainly just skating forwards and backwards cross overs and occasional rockers and brackets in between. After, I separate from the boys and practice some of my jumps. I was able to get my triples down for the most part, except the quad sal which has been hard for me to get under control recently. It's either over rotated or under rotated and my landings always seem to fall off edge 

"Come on, Charlotte get you head in the game" I mumble to myself, groaning in frustration and adjusting my ponytail 

Coming towards me, I see Yuzuru jump into his quad sal followed by a triple toe right after landing the jump clean 

"Wow Yuzu-kun, no need to show off" I joke 

He sticks his tongue at me before skating off to practice his triple toe on the opposite end of the ice. By the looks of it, I can already tell Four Continents in going to be a difficult competition for me. I need to skate two clean programs. I need to land the two quads. I need to prove to the world that I deserve to be on top again. But is this what figure skating is about? Is it really about breaking records or is it about creating a story on ice? 

I skate around the ice again building up my speed to jump into another quad sal. I extend my left leg back doing a three turn and then pulling myself up into the air to rotate. Once my blade lands on the heel , I can already tell it was another failed attempt and the pain on my bottom is all the confirmation I need

"Charlotte, you need to focus on the take off alright? I know you have a quick momentum in your jumps but please try taking it slower the next time" Coach says skating up to me

"Yeah sure. I'll make note of that" I tell him

"Umm Coach, this is really out of topic but umm, for exams I need to play a live piece and I chose Hope and Legacy; Yuzu's free music. I was wondering if I could present it here while Yuzu skates? If that's ok with you of course" I ask him

"Hmm sure, I think that's a good idea. I'd love to see him skate with your version of the piece. I think it's cute that you think of him even during exams" Coach laughs nudging my arm as he skates beside me

"Thanks Coach. Now let my give you a clean quad sal" I tell him going to skate off

"Wait Charlotte. I got a question for you now" Coach says stopping me before I can skate off again 

"Hmm? What is it Coach?" 

"How do you feel about going to Worlds?" he asks with a serious look on his face

If I saw the look on my face, I'd laugh. I can already tell I look like a fool from the way Coach is smiling and laughing at me. Is he serious?

"Are you kidding me?" I shout excitedly, quickly slapping my mouth shut as Yuzu and Javi look over questioningly 

"I convinced Skate Canada to let you go. Since you've been clean this year, they're willing to let you go. You're Canada's top female you know? They can't let the chance of a gold medal slip" he says giving me a hug 

"Thank you so much Coach. I promise I won't let you down" 

"Alright now give me that quad you promised"
