Beginners

"Javi put me down!!" I scream as I beat his back with my fists

"Leave the baby alone Javi" Alex laughs as I'm being tossed around like a potato sack

"I swear this friendships is a dictatorship!" I protest with half my body tossed over Javi's shoulder. I can feel the blood in my body rush to my head from being upside down for so long

"Javi don't drop her!" Yuzu says rushing from the change rooms in his exhibition costume; "The Swan"

"Yuzu save me!" I scream

"Alex get this in the vlog!" Maia calls, reminding Alex about their YouTube channel

I hear the beep of a camera turning on, assuming Alex pulled it out

"Charlie-san! I got you" Yuzu shouts and I feel him pulling me from Javi's grasp and into his own

"Charlie-san!" Yuzu cries, spinning me around in his arms

"Yuzu-kun!" I cry back, wrapping my arms around his neck

"Alright guys, you two are cute and all but we need to get ready, ok? The exhibition is about the start" Mao calls from somewhere in the crowd of skaters

"Charlie-san, I can't wait to see your program. You look beautiful in your dress" Yuzu says as he puts me down and holds both of my hands in his

I'm dressed in a lilac purple dress that's skirt is a bit longer than the typical figure skating dress, looking almost like an ice dancer's. Yuzu is wearing a beautifully designed white shirt that has feathers and jewels across the surface of it, representing the swan he plays in his program

"Thank you Yuzu-kun, but I know you'll do amazing as always" I say, swaying out hands a little

"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the gala event at this year's Cup of China"

On that note, the little girls that pick up the flowers enter the ice, doing a routine where they carry the flags of each competitors country in hand while the announcer calls out each skater

"Your Ice dance champions, Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir"

"Go get'em guys!" I shout, watching the pair skate onto the ice, doing a lap around the rink

The announcer was currently calling out the ice dancers after he finished calling out the pairs. Tessa and Scott being the winners got called last

"For the ladies event, Kanako Murakami of Japan!"

Kanako leaves the back stage and skates around the ice, being the first lady called onto the ice

"I always loved the exhibition event" I say to Yuzu as we're standing side by side with our hand intertwined

"Me too" he replies simply

"Hi guys!"

I turn behind me and there she stands; Evegnia

I guess the two of us are on okay terms right now

"Not dating huh?" she questions while crossing her arms and glancing at our hands

"Nope" I say

"Nuh uh" Yuzu says right after

Although I know deep down that I love him, I can't admit it out loud. Especially not in front of him

"Sure guys" she says unconvinced

"The ladies silver medalist, representing Russia, Evgenia Medvedeva!"

"Well that's my cue guys" she says and walks over to the ice, skating away

"I guess I'm up next" I say, turning to face Yuzu

"I guess you are" he says and before I know it he does the unthinkable

"Please welcome your gold medalist, representing Canada, Charlotte Akagi!"

As my name is called, Yuzu leans his face forward and lightly pecks my right cheek, leaning his forehead on mine afterwards

Thank god the lights dimmed so he can't see the wild blush that's probably taken over my cheeks

"Go for it Charlie-san" he whispers, making my heart race

Deciding to be brave, I stand on the tips of my toe pics and lightly kiss him on the forehead before leaving to take the ice

Evgenia just got off the ice meaning, I was the next to skate. Here at the exhibition, the only thing that matters to me is wowing the crowd and with this performance I know I can

I hear the crowd cheer, making me feel whole

This is the exhibition, where nothing really matters but impressing the crowd, not the judges or your home country. It's where you make a stand for yourself or in my case, Yuzu

As I stand centre ice, the music from Slow Club suddenly fills the rink

And in a moment it all came to this

My body moves with the sound of Charles Watson and Rebecca Taylor's voices. I can dance more freely and show my fun side with this music, seeing as it's more upbeat and the tempo brings out the happiness in me

While I'm skating I think about him. I think about Yuzu. The way his smile is almost contagious, the way his skating makes me feel something inside, the way he knows what to say in bad situations or the way he knows to keep quiet when I need my space

It's hard to find people like him and I'm glad I did

In more ways than others I feel like I like we're all beginners. I'm still learning to love, learning to skate, learning what life is and how to make the most of it

I feel grateful for choosing figure skating as a career because it taught me to be one of those beginners and that life is too short not to fall in love. It brought me happiness despite the dip in my career after Sochi. It brought a meaning to my life and a story only I and my loved ones will live to tell

Bur most importantly

It brought me Yuzu

And I couldn't be happier to be one of those beginners
