Reid is hands down my favorite character so I had to make this one about him. To do that, however, I needed to get creative with the timelines. Please pretend that Reid went to school with kids his age until grade 5.

It was October. Too late in the school year to join a new middle school and expect to have friends. Sydney sighed as she looked at the door, preparing herself.

"Okay, class!" Mrs. Okawa chirped. "Today we have a new student! Everyone, say hello to Sydney!"

The fifth graders responded with a half-hearted hello.

"Okay then! How about you sit right next to..." Mrs. Okawa scanned the class, "Spencer over there?"

Sydney nodded and walked over to the empty desk.

"Hi," she said.

Spencer looked up. "Um, h- hi."

"You seem nervous. Why are you nervous?"

"No one talks to me unless it's to make fun of me." Spencer looked back down at his book. His eyes scanned the pages effortlessly.

Both shocked and fascinated by his reading capabilities, Sydney leaned over to ask him more questions when Mrs. Okawa began teaching.

To be continued, Sydney thought.

. . .

Spencer and Sydney talked for the preceding two weeks and became good friends. Spencer would dazzle Sydney with his intellect and Sydney would help Spencer in other social situations.

"Sydney?"

"Yes, Spencer?"

"Thank you for being my friend."

Sydney smiled. "Thank you for being mine."

"You're not gonna leave, are you?"

"No, of course not! You're my best friend!"

"I am, in fact, your only friend in Nevada."

Sydney gave Spencer an annoyed look.

"E- ergo your best friend!" Spencer said in an effort to cover up. "But you're also my best friend."

Sydney laughed and retorted, "I am actually your only friend, though."

Spencer shrugged. "I really only need the one."

. . .

About halfway through November, Sydney stopped coming to school. At first, Spencer thought Sydney just had the flu and called every day to see how she was doing. Every day he left a message. Finally, after two weeks, Spencer went over to Sydney's house.

"Oh, Spencer, hello," greeted Mr. Parkins.

"Is Sydney alright?" he sheepishly asked.

Mr. Parkins sighed. "I suppose Mrs. Okawa didn't read the message to the class. Um, do you want to come inside?"

Spencer shook his head.

"Alright. Well, Sydney has Leukemia."

Spencer's stomach plummeted.

"She's in the hospital. Leukemia is—"

"I know what it is!" Spencer shouted. He wasn't sure where this boldness came from and apologized immediately. "C- can I see her?"
