Henry splashed JJ.
"Hey!" she cheered. "Keep the water in the tub, okay?"
"Okay, mommy."
You smiled at your family, sad you had to ruin the fun.
You walked into the bathroom and placed your hand on JJ's shoulder.
"Hi!" she giggled.
"Looks like you guys are having a lot of fun, huh?"
"Uh huh!" Henry nodded.
"Well, I hate to break this up but..."
JJ looked at you deflatedly. Turning back to Henry, she said, "Okay, five minutes and we're done."
"Daisha's on her way."
"When are you coming back?" Henry asked.
"As soon as we can," you answered.
"Promise?"
"Promise."
"And we always keep our promises, right?" JJ directed to Henry.
"Right!"

"No. No! You- you promised! You promised you'd be fine!" You let out a shattered sob. "And we always keep our promises," you whispered into her hair.
JJ let out a small chuckle. "I guess not all of them."
You pressed your hands against your wife's stomach hoping to slow the blood loss.
"Hey," she whispered.
You looked up and locked eyes.
"It's okay. Stop," she breathed.
You shook your head hard and slow. "No. No. No, no, no, no, no. We need you, Jennifer. Please- please."
JJ closed her eyes and shook her head slowly. "I love you. And Henry."
You felt JJ's grip lighten as the EMTs rushed over.
You were pushed out of the way and fell back in slow motion. You didn't process anything anyone said.
