"So can genetically modified mosquitoe resist parasite development?" Aku memandang setiap wajah dalam kelas. Pelajar yang sama aku ajar semester lepas. Mula semester baru ni, aku ajar subjek Urban and Medical Entomology.

Ingatkan semester baru ada kemajuan. Haram. Semua tercengang dengar soalan aku, termasuklah Akira yang sedang sarat kendong anak aku dalam perut dia. 

Aku memaksa diri untuk kawal bara yang mula nak berubah jadi api bila mereka semua diam membatu tanpa jawapan. Masing-masing clueless.

"Mosquitoes are vectors yes?" Soal aku. Tujuh kepala angguk serentak.

"They carry pathogenic parasite. Agree?" Soal aku lagi.

Mereka angguk sambil jawab, "Agree Dr."

"So kalau kita genetically modify nyamuk tu, can they resist parasite development? Meaning, will they step down from being a vector and host to the parasite?" Aku mengulangi pertanyaan aku yang awal-awal tadi. 

Baru sekarang aku nampak roda dalam kepala mereka berputar, cuba berfikir dan mencari logik jawapan. Beberapa minit kelas membisu, akhirnya satu tangan takut-takut naik ke langit.

"Ha Akira. You want to share something?" Aku memeluk tubuh dan salurkan sepenuh perhatian pada dia. Bukan aku saja, bahkan satu kelas sedang berlipat leher memandang dia.

"I think firstly we have to identify the genes that make those mosquitoes susceptible to the parasites before altering them. Lepas dah identified genes tu, then baru kita boleh ubah mana yang patut and see whether it can help in resisting parasite development inside the vector's gut." 

Ringkas dan padat dia beri penjelasan. Aku mengunci renungan mata dia untuk beberapa saat sebelum mengangguk sekali.

"Yes, as Akira has gracefully told us, we need to identify the gene that is responsible in making those mosquitoes to be susceptible to parasites. 

Then we'll integrate foreign DNA into the mosquitoe's genome through a transformation system. So basically we'll alter the vector competency. Nicely done Akira." 

Aku mengenyitkan sebelah mata sebelum meneruskan pengajaran tentang topik kawalan vektor melalui kaedah manipulasi gene.

Okay I have to admit, this chapter is selfishly to satisfy my inner Biologist. 

That's why is super short and loaded with pure Biology. Can't help it. I'm wired like this.
