CHAPTER 5

"All right, Kate asked you out on a date!" I exclaim, genuinely happy for him.

"She did, but I don't want to be in a relationship," he says, his tone resolute.

"Come on, it's just a single date. It can't be that bad, can it?" I nudge him playfully. "Besides, it'll give me some time to plan my revenge."

"I'm not going," he states firmly.

"It's only one cup of coffee, what's the worst that could happen?" I scold him lightly, giving his shoulder a playful tap. Unfortunately, it also aggravates the pain in my hand.

"Come with me," he invites, his eyes pleading.

"Oh no, I'm not getting involved in this," I motion to him, shaking my head.

"It would make me feel better if you were there," he pleads.

"Steve, I'm not joining you on your date. There's nothing in the world that could change my mind."

"This is ridiculous," I mutter to myself, disguising my appearance with a large coat and scarf. I take a seat in a dark corner of the cafe, where I'm less likely to be noticed.

Steve sits with Kate, looking visibly awkward but occasionally flashing a smile. Meanwhile, I keep a watchful eye from my secluded spot.

Why did I agree to this again? The waiter approaches my table and asks for my order.

"I'll have a turkey sandwich with cheddar cheese, fries, and a Dr. Pepper, please," I say politely, trying to focus on the menu rather than the date happening nearby. The waiter nods and goes to fulfill the order.

A few minutes later, my food arrives, and I start eating while engrossed in a YouTube documentary playing on my phone.

"Is there anything else you need?" the waiter asks later, as I finish my meal.

"No, thank you. Just the bill," I reply, looking up at him. He smiles warmly, and our eyes meet briefly.

"Oh, of course, I'll bring that right over, along with my phone number," he says confidently before walking away. I can't help but grin. Looks like I've got a winner here!

I celebrate silently to myself as Steve takes a seat in front of me.

"What happened to Kate? You can't actually be here," I give him a playful kick on the shin.

"Why not? Did Kate already leave?" he asks, grabbing a fry from my plate.

"That cute waiter is taking care of my bill," I pause for effect, "and he also gave me his phone number."

"So I'm just sitting here?" Steve says, still not fully grasping what I'm implying.

"Dude, you're an 11/10 in these streets," I say, but then I notice the cute waiter approaching and handing me the bill.
