"We think this minecart track here might lead up to the surface," Roxanne said.
The track started on the stony floor in a cavern not far from where the Red Pearl was perched. It sloped steeply upwards, into a dark opening near the ceiling, and Robyn could see little more beyond it.
"Does it? Have you tried?" Meg asked.
"We haven't," the Stylist said. "There was only enough iron in the ship's stores to make one minecart because the rest had been used on cannons and cannonballs."
"Arr, me wonder whose idea that was?" Red Beard muttered.
"Well, we've got a bit of lead on us," Robyn said. "It seems to be craftable into everything iron can." She checked her inventory. "We have enough to make two more."
"So we can all head up in groups of three," Amidias said. "When a group gets to the top, they can push back their minecarts for the next."
"Great idea," the Princess said.
"But there's seven of us!" the Angler pointed out. "I might have failed math class when James tried to teach me, but that doesn't go into three, right?"
"That just means the first two groups will have three and then the last person will go up on their own," Meg said.
"Arr, the lassie be right," Red Beard said.
"I'll head up first with Roxanne and Red Beard behind me," Meg said. "Just to make sure nothing dangerous is in our way. Then once we send the minecarts back, Robyn can come up with Bart and Princess Faye. Then Amidias can come up on his own."
"Why me last?" Amidias asked.
"You've got 7500 health. If anything tries to jump on you, I'm sure it won't hurt you too much."
"Fair enough. But even some forces can make my 7500 health seem like nothing."
Using the anvil Meg had crafted earlier, they made the two extra minecarts and set them on the base of the track. Meg got in the lead one, while Red Beard and Roxanne boarded the ones behind her. Robyn attached them together with some chains, and Meg began to slowly move forward. The three minecarts hit the upward slope and began accelerating up it.
"See you at the other side!" Meg called, waving.
"Avast!" Red Beard shouted.
The three of them then disappeared into the darkness, leaving Robyn with Amidias, Bart, and Princess Faye. Five minutes later the minecarts hadn't returned, and Robyn began to get worried. What if something had happened to them? But before too long the three minecarts returned, bumping into the buffers at the end of the track.
"You three are up," Amidias said.
Bart and the Princess climbed into their carts first, Bart holding out his hand for support as the Princess climbed in. Robyn was about to follow suit when a movement caught her eye.
"Get down!" she cried.
She leapt to the floor just in time to avoid the object that sailed over Bart and Faye and towards her. It exploded behind her in a massive bright green explosion, the blast forming a perfect circle that persisted for about a second before dissipating.
Then knives began hurling themselves towards her, being thrown by a person that was jumping through the air. Whoever he was, he seemed to be dressed in some sort of purple and brown outfit, with a helmet that completely covered his face, four yellow dots glowing on his visor. A lavender shawl was draped across his shoulders, over a brown tunic and grey pants.
Robyn leapt to the side to dodge the knives, which shattered upon hitting the ground, and threw up her head in Bart and Faye's direction.
"Get out of here!" she shouted.
