Narrator's POV:
"We did everything we can to make sure she went peacefully." The doctor looked up from his clip board, and had Y/n sign the rather short document.
The doctor left, his footsteps still audible until he walked through the door, shutting it behind him. Y/n stood next to Kate without saying a word
Y/n sighed with a tear starting to form in her eyes, she took a deep breath before saying a word. "She needs to be buried by Natasha. I'll call my dad." Y/n began to walk away from Kate.
"Y/n don't you think you should take a minute to process this all?" Kate put her hand on Y/n's forearm, trying to get her to slow her grieving process a bit.
"I'm going to call my dad." Y/n said a bit firmer, before leaving Kate standing there in the waiting room alone.
Y/n walked outside of the waiting room and into the hall. Her hands shook as she dialed the number she knew by heart. She couldn't help but think what her family would say about this, they already lost Nat, besides the family, the closest person to Nat was Maria. Y/n came to the realization that no one would ever know Natasha the way her and Maria did. Maria shouldn't have had to go in that manner.
Y/n already started crying by the first ring of the phone. "Hello?" Cooper picked up sounding confused as to why his older sister was calling out of the blue.
Y/n sniffled to cover her cries. "Um... can you put dad or mom on the phone?"
"Uh yeah." His light footsteps could be heard over the phone. There was a few moment of silence until she heard her moms voice.
"Hey honey, what-"
"Maria's dead."
"What?" Laura asked in a confused tone, she previously had the phone between her ear and shoulder while she was doing the dishes, but she dried her hands and grabbed the phone.
"Agent Hill, Maria. She was captured by the man we were after, he shot her, before I could help her. She was pronounced dead at 11:03pm."
"Y/n sweetie, don't you think you should take a breath. Get some fresh air, me, your father, and your siblings will get on the soonest flight there. Are you okay? Hurt, injuries, anything?"
"Okay. I um... I think I'm fine." Y/n was less shaky now and there were no tears.
"Where's Kate? Is she okay?" Laura's next concern was her daughter in law. She knew Y/n could get through anything if she had Kate by her side to comfort her and reassure her.
"Yeah she's okay, she's sitting in the waiting room still." Y/n walked back down the hall and saw Kate waiting.
"Go to Kate. She'll take good care of you okay? We'll be there by tomorrow at noon. Get some sleep okay. I love you." Laura was confused and shock at this new information.
Y/n sat on one of the few chairs in the hall, putting her hands to her face. She felt so much anger within herself. What kind of people would do this? This monster killed Maria for no reason other than to torture Y/n, and it sure as hell worked.
Kate sat next to her, keeping a comfortable distance due to the fact Y/n had previously basically told her to fuck off.
"I'm sorry." Y/n mumbled, her hands still covering her face.
"Don't apologize, it's okay. You have emotions, and you are rightfully angry. I love you, and I'll be here for you no matter what." Kate put her arm around Y/n.
Y/n rested her head on Kate's shoulder. Kate felt the tears finally start flowing from Y/n's eyes onto her sleeve.
"It's okay, let it out." Kate rubbed Y/n's back, leaving practically no space between them.
...
The Next Morning
...Kate woke up in hers and Y/n's temporary SHIELD base room. It's crazy to think back a few days ago, all the agents had a positive energy when walking around the base. Now that word of Maria's death has come out, everyone seems so blue.
Last night when they came back from the hospital, people glared and whispered. All around the base.
Kate turned to her side to see Y/n still sound asleep. She needed that sleep desperately, she deserved it. Kate texted Clint last night to see when they'd be landing. The soonest flight they could find was 10am this morning. The time on her phone only read 7am.
She rubbed her eyes and wished this could all just disappear.
"Why are you awake so early?" Y/n grumbled, turning to face Kate.
"Just thinking." Kate said, putting her hand on Y/n's cheek.
"Your hands are cold." Y/n whined, grabbing Kate's hands to hold under the blanket.
"Your family will be here in a few hours." Kate said, resting her forehead on Y/n's.
"Why are you so freezing." Y/n was so tired she didn't even focus on the words Kate was saying.
"I think you need more sleep." Kate said, kissing Y/n's forehead.
"Me too." Y/n turned to lay on her other side, and scooted back so her back was against Kate's stomach. Kate knew this was Y/n's way of telling her she wanted to be cuddled.
So sure enough, she wrapped her arm around her waist, and rested her head on Y/n's pillow.
