Chapter 17: "That Guy with His Companion"

THE RATTLING noise of the bonfire kept me safe through the night.

Alistair is carefully sleeping with him the egg he just acquired more than half a minute ago. Instead of keeping it to his bag, he used it as a body pillow, comfortably asleep with a smile plastered on his face.

Leonidas is sitting watch for the night. He's currently on a tree branch, his back against the trunk, while both hands crossed and feet stretched to the long branch he's on. "You should sleep already. I'm the one who's guarding for this night."

I gazed up to the starry night, mind blank. Completely amazed by the cold and peacefulness of the night.

Fogs disappeared minutes ago. And I'm sure we're far from that vulture nest tree, instead we are now hiding in a big boulders encircling with some small withered trees.

The cat is sleeping on my lap. I tried caressing its furry head but then it actually woke up with bored eyes, that makes me stop from moving my hands. Sandali kaming nagkatitigan. He's most likely pouting than just staring sideway up to my eyes.

Ano bang problema nito?

Should I say something? No. That's absurd. "What's wrong with that stare?" Nah. Nevermind.

"Meow~" Medyo malumanay ang tugon nya pero halatang nakasimangot talaga sa 'kin.

"Just sleep again. Hindi kita maintindihan."

"Meow~"

"Ang aga-aga nanghihingi ka ng pagkain."

"Meow~"

"Don't you dare 'meow' me."

"Meow~"

I just let out a deep sigh, turning my head away. Ano na naman ba 'tong ginagawa ko?

Muling nagsalita si Leonidas. "I told you. That cat likes you." then he yawned a bit.

"Ikaw na lang kaya ang matulog muna." I suggested before putting the cat beside Alistair to keep it warm.

Tumayo akong hinarap si Leonidas sa itaas ng sangang 'yon nang nakasuksok ang dalawang bulsa sa pantalon. "Hoy. Sabi ko magpalit tayo. Palagi ka lang sitting on guard kahit no'ng kasama pa natin ang iba. Hindi ka ba napapagod?"

Then he sighed, jumping down infront of me. "Fine. Just don't mess around, kid. I'll choke you to death if that happens."

"Fine. Just sleep already." He walked passed me. Samantalang diretso naman akong naglakad at tumuntong sa tuktok ng isa sa malalaking boulder sa malapit, at do'n halukipkip na naupo.

An owl suddenly hummed a disturbing sound kaya't muntik akong mahulog dahil malapit lang ang pinanggagalingan nito. Inis ko itong nilingon sa gilid kaya't patay-malisya naman itong tumigil din.

My stare is threatening. Halatang nanginig ng kunti ang kuwagong 'yon kaya't para rin itong estatuwang nagtago sa butas ng kahoy kung saan ay hindi ko na rin ito masilayan.

Napabuntong-hininga na lang akong binalik sa harap ang tingin. But not long after, I heard another noise.

It sounded like footsteps. Resonating within this good as dead forest.

Nilingon ko si Leonidas katabi ng bonfire na himbing na agad ang tulog. Mabilis syang nakakatulog. Ang galing naman.

Then I heard that sound again. Nabalik sa harapan ang tingin ko. That same time, the footsteps eventually stopped.
