The air feels so heavy and loaded with electricity that it is almost suffocating you while you are running. Your weakened body doesn’t help either when sending out signals of nausea and tiredness to your brain. Still, you have to move on or someone affiliated with the Kamisatos might catch up to you.
Despite it being daytime, not a single soul aside from you and Rosa are out in the streets. This brewing storm must be unsettling for the citizens, but you are not judging them for it – if there wasn’t a necessity for you to be outside, you wouldn’t be here either. Running up the stairs leading to Tenshukaku, you come across plenty of unconscious soldiers - at least you hope they are only unconscious and not worse. The suffocating feeling only gets worse with every step you take.
Like the first ray of sunshine in the morning, a flash of golden hair appears at the very top of the stairs together with a floating speck of white. “Aether!”
He seems to have heard you. “(Y/N)? You are still alive! But what are you doing here-“ Stumbling, he moves downstairs to meet you. Happy to see your trusted friend you do the same. As both Rosa and Paimon aren’t as affected by the tension in the air as you and Aether, they arrive faster in the middle. Paimon immediately gives the little Seelie a hearty hug. Suddenly, purple sparks form behind the Traveler and out of them comes forth the feared Raiden Shogun with her sword, ready to strike Aether down.
As if your body went on autopilot, you lunge forward to push him out of the way. Whatever strength was left in your body is enough to save Aether just in time without getting sliced in half yourself. The tiredness having become unbearable, you feel yourself unable to stand up from where you landed. This sweet break doesn’t last long as your friend sits you down on the solid ground next to him. Not that Aether minds you laying on top of him (quite the opposite), but in the face of danger it is better when you stay behind him.
Having recovered a bit from the exhaustion, you see that your surroundings have changed completely: The ground isn’t made of stone anymore, but of something similar to sand and instead of seeing Inazuma City in the background, there is now an endless emptiness. You and Aether are now in the Plane of Euthymia, facing Ei. Just as the Archon draws her sword, your golden-haired friend draws his and puts himself protectively in front of you.
You can’t properly see her from your position, but you do feel her piercing gaze. “We meet again, Traveler. And this person behind you is…”
“The person you declared a wanted criminal for no proper reason…”, you cough.
“(Y/N)…”, she sighs, “…I see. What a waste of time, it was just wishful thinking in the end…”
