Tasha put her hands behind her head and gave her best friend a knowing look.
"Did you guys fuck?"
"I just met him!" Sari exclaimed, sipping on her iced coffee.
"Yes or no?"
"No, Tasha. We declared it as a date and we just smoked and watched porn."
"Your favorite pastime. Go on."
"And of course I slept over because we were too smacked to drive. That's it. Well, he made me breakfast."
Sari and Zayn had been talking and texting and Facetiming for a week now, occasionally making plans that fell through because of Zayn's job but she understood, being a temp and not knowing if you'd make permanent was stressful, especially since he was like, an IT guy.
"So do you like him?" Tasha pressed.
"I guess, he's really funny and cute and he caught my attention so quick. Like, he's so cute."
"And he doesn't care about your weight?"
Sari sometimes hated Tasha, more so the fact Tasha had no filter. What made it worse was she wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed. She loved her to death, though.
Sari was what the doctors considered overweight but she was only about two hundred and thirty pounds. It was because she was a little taller she didn't look fat. Yeah, sure, she had a few rolls and her thighs were thicker than most, but was that so bad? She was healthy and happy and not at risk for anything. What was wrong with being a big girl?
"If he cared I'm sure he wouldn't want to see me again," she rolled her eyes, "not everyone that takes an interest in me cares about my weight."
"Except--"
"Say his name, bitch," Sari snapped, going from zero to one hundred real quick and glaring at Tasha who looked like she regretted this lunch date, "say it, since you wanna keep bringing shit up."
"I'm just--"
"Saying, I know. Not everything is about that incompetent prick. As soon as I'm over it you bring him up again."
"Cesa--"
"What?"
"Sorry," Tasha pouted, "I won't bring him up again. I just don't wanna see you hurt. You really liked him."
"Wrong. I loved him and he broke my heart. But that was also two years ago and I've been ready for a new relationship. I'm fine, I promise," she took a deep breath and her friend relaxed.
"You scared the shit out of me," she laughed breathlessly, "sorry, damn. You've always had a temper."
"I know," she groaned, "I've taken anger classes and that shit just makes me more mad. Fuck it."
Tasha just laughed, wondering what she was going to do about her friend, probably.
"Tasha! Sweeeeeeeet Tashaaaaaaa!"
Sari rolled her eyes at Tasha's boyfriend but smiled nonetheless. His name was Miles and he was so adorable. He was all muscular but he was a complete softie, and they were so perfect for each other that Sari concluded they'd get married any day now. Honestly. They'd been together for three years.
"Hey, Miles," she kissed his cheek, "thanks for dropping me off, Sari."
"It's nothing. I'll see you tomorrow," they hugged and Sari made her way back to her car.
Her phone rang as she drove on the seat and she answered it through the Bluetooth of the car so she would keep both hands on the wheel if she wanted.
"Saraaayyyyy."
She smiled. "Zayn."
"Hey, whatcha doin'?"
"Driving home, you?"
"Same. My friend invited me to a party and I'm dreading it."
"Why? Parties are fun."
"I mean, yeah. But I don't know these people. They all look like they should own a Hollister store or like, vape shops."
"They're hot?"
"Attractive enough. I just left though."
"Why? Zayn, come on. Go back."
"Can't make me," he challenged.
Sari shook her head and laughed at him, turning onto her street. "Zayn, do it for your friend."
"I mean we both have mutual friends here but a lot of people I just don't know. My friend's in his last year of college, it's like a senior party minus the students except for him."
"Your friend is weird."
"Say it again. Come with me."
"No."
"Well, then I'm coming over."
Bloop.
Sari sighed, secretly loving that he'd rather spend time with her than at some lame party. It probably wasn't lame but whatever. She pulled into her complex and got out just as Zayn was pulling in.
"I was already headed here, I promise," he got out with his hands up in defense.
"You're so weird," she laughed and headed inside to walk up the steps, "tell me about this party you ditched."
"Like, nobody could dance, man."
"So, white people?"
He rolled his eyes. "And other ethnic backgrounds, ya goose."
"What kind of party is that?"
"A terrible one, I tell you," she unlocked her door and closed it behind him, "it started like an hour ago. On time."
Sari gave a face and Zayn raised his eyebrows in agreement. "That's never okay."
"What are you about to do?" he asked, sitting at a stool and watching Sari cut a few lights on.
She shrugged. "Another Friday night and I have nothing to do."
"Let's get to know each other," Zayn said excitedly, "that's fundamental."
"True," Oliver sat between them both and Zayn just laughed, petting the dogs head. Oliver groaned and leaned on Zayn's shoulder. "He swears he's a small dog."
"He's cute. Name?"
"Oliver."
"Hmm," Zayn held the dog's face in his hands, "you don't even look like Mitchell Musso."
"Oh my God."
