Protecting You

I gently pushed you hair back off your forehead.

kissing the sweet spot above your almond eyes.

wind beat at the door.

lights flickered on and then off.

there was no rain in the storm tonight.

only the fable of imagination that nature tricks our ears with.

the pranks of the thunder scared you only because you hated things that were not real.

you longed for the lightning, the downpours of rain, the chaos, the truths.

none of it came, only the chill of the false winds to let you know it was there.

My lips stayed on your forehead until you fell asleep.

I put my hand over your heart so you knew that it could not hurt you.

the bravado of mother nature's fairy tales.

I sleep none that night, it was the best night of my life so far.

I knew I could love you through what you feared the most.

not one caring thought of how I could get you to love me back in the sunshine.

long after that night, after you left, I longed for the storms, real or fake. Just so I could hold you through the night knowing that you were safe.
