Investigation

- Ludwig's POV -

"Good morning, Ludwig!" I heard a voice call out to me as I walked to my office.

I turn back to see the familiar face of Emma, a coworker and friend, "Morning, Emma,"

She smiled brightly, as always, "We haven't seen each other in a while! How have you been?"

I smiled back at her, "I've been fine,"

"Oh?" She said curiously, "Is that a smile I see?"

I glanced away, suddenly aware of my actions. Emma knew me too well, as she took care of me as a child after my father's death and Gilbert's disappearance. After Gilbert was reported missing, I was sent to the foster care system, but she never stopped to check on me once in a while. She was eventually the one who convinced me to join the academy to train to be part of the CCG. She was like the older sibling I didn't have.

"Well, whatever is making you smile, I hope it continues to do so,"

Subconsciously, I thought of Feliciano and muttered under my breath, "I hope so too..."

As soon as we arrived at the office, Arthur Kirkland noticed us and walked over, "Just the pair I needed to see. You're appointed on a mission. Follow me,"

Emma looked at me and shrugged and we both followed as ordered to his office. I usually work alone and on casual missions, like looking out for ghouls and eliminating them. Being assigned to a mission that required a partner means either it is extensive in research, time consuming, dangerous, or all of the above.

We sat down in front of his desk as he laid down the folders, opening them to documents and photographs, "At the time of the death of the Kol Clan leader, Katyusha, witnesses stated that she was attacking a human beforehand,"

"Yes, it was my cousin, Antonio," Emma mentioned, "He told me what had happened and said he managed to escape,"

"With a broken leg?" Arthur questioned.

"Well, yes, I did find that odd..." Emma agreed with a nervous chuckle.

"It is very odd indeed as the agents who contained Katyusha also mentioned they found her weakened by fighting another ghoul,"

Arthur pointed to picture that had been zoomed in of the alley where Katyusha was trapped in, moments before her death. There was Emma's cousin, passed out in the corner and another ghoul wearing a mask in front of him, as if he was defending the human.

"We found a match to the mask in a files," Arthur opened another folder, showcasing information about a specific ghoul wearing the white mask with a spade on the left side, the right eye exposed, and a frown, "He is one of what we called 'the Spade Duo', as there is another ghoul that has a similar description with a few major changes, for example, the eye that is exposed and the expression on the mask. We call this one the Frowning Spade. We don't focus on him as much because there hasn't been any recent news about him or in the past as well. We seen him years ago alongside the Smiling Spade but ever since we put their photos up for look out, they've been hidden well until now,"

"What does this have to do with Antonio?" Emma asked.

"Well you see, as our agents were too busy taking out Katyusha, as that was their main priority, we realized that your cousin and the ghoul disappeared,"

"The thought of my cousin being taken by a ghoul..." She whispered and shivered, "He's lucky to have survived that somehow..."

"According to the few who noticed Antonio and the ghoul before, it seems like the ghoul was protecting Antonio for some reason from Katyusha. It's obvious as well from the picture from the defensive pose the ghoul has. We're guessing that the ghoul was the one who took Antonio back to his apartment,"

"Antonio never told me any of this..."

"It only makes sense that the ghoul, for some reason, has a connection to Antonio. We need you two to figure out what happened and figure out who that ghoul is,"

"If he isn't a danger, why are we investigating him?"

Arthur was already prepared to answer my question as he took out a folded piece of paper, "This morning, Francis got a message, or more like a threat... On his desk, there was a box. He opened it, only to find a  severed human hand with a note on its grip,"

"We want the Spade, the one who killed our Leader. Then, we target you. Capture him and we might give you mercy...

- 'Ursa Minor', The Kol Clan"

We read it silently, "So they know Francis killed her and who the Frowning Spade is,"

"And this new 'Ursa' must be the successor to the Clan,"

"They blame the Spade and Francis for killing Katyusha and wants us to do the dirty work and find the ghoul,"

"This doesn't make sense. How did they sent this box right on top of Francis' desk and how they did know the exact details of who were involved in the case?"

"It must someone working from the inside," I said what everyone was thinking. It is the only way all this was possible for a ghoul trying to hide from the world to even gain access to the CCG.

"Our main suspect is Vash Zwingli, who was part of the scientific research team. He disappeared a couple of months ago,"

"Francis, Yao and I interrogated a contained ghoul who was from the Kol Clan," I added on, "He said that Vash was indeed working with the Clan,"

"You mean Ravis?" Arthur recalled, "He's missing from his cell the day after the interrogation,"

"What? How?"

"We have no idea... It's only makes the theory that someone from the inside is working with the enemy and we must find them out before it gets worse,"

Emma and I stood up and started to exit the office, "We will be on it, sir,"

Our first part of this important mission: Find the Frowning Spade.
