Louder than Bombs

I pace the floor, nearly worrying a hole through my bottom lip as it's trapped tightly between my teeth. Then I flinch, looking down at my palms. My fists had been clenched so tight that my fingernails had left little crescent indents in my palms. I work my thumbs over the soreness, alternating to inspire more blood flow into each appendage. Get it together, Vi, I tell myself. It's probably nothing. But even as I try to convince myself, the sickly leaden feeling in my gut intensifies.

It hasn't been long since I found the article, but it's been long enough for me to be a complete wreck. I tried to remind myself to wait before jumping to conclusions; there's no use in freaking out over something that could be a complete hoax. But part of me knows it's not. Because this is absolutely something antis would do to hurt the boys. I was just collateral damage. But I also served as ammunition for the attacks. I was the perfect catalyst for their schemes.

A sudden announcement sounds from the television that rattles me from my inner turmoil and I scurry over to the screen, my heart pounding. The red carpet MC jovially welcomes Bangtan Sonyeondan, and with bright smiles and grateful spirits, the boys bow and wave to the crowd, completely oblivious of what awaits them. From what I can see, everything is perfectly fine. They look amazing. They answer simple questions with ease. And they even bless the audience with some aegyo for photo ops. No big deal and nothing out of the ordinary. Which leads me to believe that the article got it wrong. Or they just don't know that there's a plot against them.

According to that site, disgruntled fans who had felt betrayed by the boys being in a relationship had enlisted the help of antis from other idol fandoms. These were stans that were sick and tired of BTS racking up all the big awards and dominating the charts, making it so their preferred groups couldn't get more recognition. So with their help, the former ARMYs had hatched a plan for them to enter the ticket raffle en masse. And there were thousands of them. Millions if you count the foreigners who entered to help throw off the algorithm. This gave real ARMYs less chances of getting a ticket to cheer on the boys. And the other winners...according to the report, most didn't even plan to go. Except for the ones who were organizing something ugly in protest.

On one hand, it sounds petty and childish. Like, who fucking cares that a bunch of dumbasses can't wrap their heads around them having a romantic life? But I know what this would do to them. I know how deeply hurt they'd be to see empty seats where their loyal, loving fans should be. And I could not bear to see the looks on their faces when they realized what was happening: they had been tainted. And that was a death wish for an idol group once K-Media and international news jumped all over it. And they would. The rise of Bangtan was triumphant and inspiring. But the fall of Bangtan would be sensationalized and exploited.

People love a good scandal. Fifty empty seats would be written up as five hundred. Taehyung's impassive expression would be described as cold and agitated. Namjoon's heartfelt words would be translated as morose and desperate. The press would rip them to shreds, and social media wouldn't be much gentler. Fans of competing groups would trend malicious hashtags that would reach every corner of Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. The biggest band in the world would be labeled the biggest failures almost overnight. And that...that would crush them.

that would crush them
