I felt like I made the worst decision by trusting Deucalion. Everything was happening so fast. That night, I sit alone in a tree, thinking. Deucalion stands under me. "Why are you up there? I told you to let us heal your wound."

I use my hand to cover the bite mark that remained over my shoulder. It doesn't bleed, often, but it still remains. Even Scott's wound healed a long time ago. "Deucalion, why did you send the twins after me?"

I hear him chuckle. "You, sweetheart, are something special an-"

I hop down from the tree. "I am tired of being told that! Why am I special!?"

"You have no idea..."

"What?"

"You have some potential. You are the key to the balance of the supernatural world. You see things others can't and you are capable of more than you even know."

I sigh and climb back up the tree. Why me? That night, we come across an opening in the woods at night. I see a firefly. Scott points this out. "Wait, fireflies aren't common in this area," I say.

"The fireflies, the deer that almost ran into Lydia's car and the cat and bird suicides..."

"Happened just before Jennifer started her killing spree."

Deucalion speculates that since animals can sense natural disasters, like earthquakes, they may also be able to sense supernatural disasters. "Does Jennifer scare you?" Scott asks.

"She concerns me because she is willing to kill so many innocent people for her cause," he replies.

"Are you willing to kill innocents as well?" I ask.

"I'll kill any living thing that gets in my way."

Deucalion leads us to another moonlight opening. I see Ms. Morrell in a circle of Mountain Ash and the twins on the ground. Deucalion approaches and inquires how 'Marin' knew that they would come for her. "I figured you would come to kill me because me and Jennifer are the same and you've always been suspicious of Druids and what they can do," she replies.

"We have good reason to be suspicious. We know that Morrell sent that girl to save Isaac," Kali says.

"The girl's name was Braeden. I sent her to do what maintains balance."

Balance. "What do you know about Jennifer?" Kali asks.

"I know nothing more than you already know." She then turns her attention to me and Scott. "Go back to your friends."

"The McCall twins can decide for themselves," Deucalion says.

"They don't have all the information to make that decision. You neglected to tell the about how many bodies have piled up in your narcissistically psychotic efforts to form your 'perfect pack'. Deucalion killed Ennis," Ms. Morrell explains. "Deaton saved him before Deucalion arrived. Getting Kali to go after Derek is simply a tactic to get Derek to join the Alpha Pack which will pave the way for you two."

"She's lying because she is begging for her life," Deucalion defends. He looks to me. "You can get to her. Step over the line and pull her out. I'll do the rest."

I hesitate. He wants me to kill her. I shake my head. "I can't," I whisper.

"Say again?"

"I said I can't," I repeat, with more authority. "I can and will never kill an innocent. I might be a predator but I don't have to be a killer."

"You certainly do have Alpha blood surging through your veins," Deucalion says. "Talia was right about you all along."

He then takes his cane, pops off the tip revealing a blade and throws it underhanded at Morrell. I catch it, all of a sudden. I even surprise myself. I take it with both of my hands and break it in half. I throw it at his feet. "You might kill innocents but you will not hurt one on my watch."

I get Ms. Morrell off to the side, far enough from Deucalion. "Find the Nemeton. You find that, you'll find Jennifer," she whispers.

Later on, Stiles and Deaton meets us in the woods. "None of the Alphas know where the Nemeton is located," Scott tells them.

Stiles questions if Scott plans to tell the Alphas if they figure it out. Scott says he can't stop Jennifer without them. "You three and Allison will serve as surrogate sacrifices for your parents. This means you will be dead for a few seconds before I bring you back. If you do this, you will give power back to the Nemeton and that will attract supernatural creatures to Beacon Hills."

"That doesn't sound any worse than what we've already been through," Stiles says.

Deaton says, "You'd be surprised at what you've yet to see."

Deaton also says dying will take a personal toll on us. We will be left with a permanent 'darkness around our hearts'. At the animal clinic, four large tubs filled with ice water and mistletoe are waiting. Deaton asks if we brought something personal that belongs to our parents. Stiles has his father's badge. While Jennifer crushed it the night before, Stiles hammered it out until it is, once again, recognizable. Allison has a silver bullet made by her father. She says it is a tradition for the hunters, when they finish training, to forge a silver bullet as a testament to the code. Scott has a Timex watch. "My dad gave this to my mom. She said it was the only thing that worked in their marriage."

I reach around my neck and pull off my necklace. It's a golden locket that has a picture of me and Scott as babies on the left. On the right is her, me and Scott at the beach when me and Scott turned three. "Mom said my dad gave it to her when they first got married. He put these pictures in when me and Scott were born. She gave it to me when he left and my mom told me it's the only thing that stayed close together in the family," I explain. I glance up at Scott. "And I'm glad we did."

"Each of you will get in and will be held underwater until your heart stops," Deaton explains.

"We'll be dead?" I ask.

"Correct. The person holding you under must also be able to pull us back, meaning an emotional attachment of some sort."

Lydia steps toward Allison since they are friends but Deaton says Lydia's attachment is with Stiles. Allison looks, suddenly, at Isaac. In an unspoken exchange, we realize that Isaac will act as her emotional tether to the world of the living. Scott gives his blessing to the union but looks less than pleased. "Wait, I don't understand," I say. "Lydia is with Stiles and Isaac is with Allison, What about me and Scott? My emotional tethers can be Derek, my mom or Scott himself."

"Me," Deaton replies. "I'll go for both of you."

I then understand since he has served as a father figure on more than one occasion and we were responsible for saving his life. We each slip in the tubs. Through shivers and chattering teeth, Stiles informs us that me and Scott's father was in town. Deaton puts a hand on my head and the other on Scott's shoulder. We were all pushed under. I struggle at first but my vision started to go black. So, this is what death is like.
