School passed by fast though, thank goodness, and I smiled as the warm sun hit my skin whilst I walked out of the building and into the parking lot. Max came bounding by then and grinning, I slung an arm around her slender shoulders.

"Hey, kiddo. How was your day?" I asked her, taking the backpack from her to carry with my own.

She smiled at me gratefully, "Eh, you know, it was school. What else can I say?"

I laughed at that as she continued, "Oh! But we did get to do this really cool experiment today and I literally thought Lucas was going to choke when they started dissecting the frog. Men can be such babies sometimes,"

I almost snorted at the reference to Lucas being a "man" just as I caught a glimpse of Billy leaning up against the hood of the car, taking a drag of his cigarette, already waiting on us. We shared a look as Max climbed in the backseat before we all hopped in. He arched at an eyebrow at me, smirking but I just shook my head which meant 'Not tonight'. He frowned, clearly crestfallen but nodded in reply as if he understood.

I know he didn't though. I'd never told him what was going on with me, what had been happening in Hawkins. I just...I felt like I was protecting him by not telling him. I'd have to make it up to him somehow...hm...

As Billy revved the engine and fishtailed out of the parking lot, I listened to Max talk about her day from the backseat.

"Oh, hey! Billy, can you drop me by the arcade? I told Lucas and Dustin I'd meet them there," she asked innocently.

I arched an eyebrow, sending her a curious look. She knew I knew what was going on here. In fact, Max was the one person I didn't have to hide all of this alien stuff from. But still, I worried about her being mixed up in all of it. Especially with those boys which while adorable, were still in trouble 95% of the time.

She pouted at me, sending me the puppy dog gaze and I rolled my eyes in response, "What about lunch?"

Max perked up then, knowing she'd won, "Oh, we'll just grab some pizza. Don't worry about me."

I could tell Billy wasn't happy about letting her leave with the boys but surprisingly, he obliged. I had a feeling he had a hidden agenda though, just waiting to catch me alone so we could talk about why I wasn't meeting him tonight. Great, just great, I thought to myself sarcastically.

In no time, we were by ourselves and Billy and I fell into a comfortable silence as he gunned the engine, letting his hand slide up my knee to rest on my thigh.

"You gonna tell me why you're bailing on me, bunny?"

I couldn't help but blush at the use of the nickname, a name that he would likely murder anyone for even hearing leave his mouth but around me, he used it regularly.

"Nancy needed me for, uh-uh...makeup...advice?" I let it linger in the air as a question and Billy arched his eyebrow incredulously.

"I'm supposed to believe that?" he asked and I frowned, falling silent.

After all, what could I say to that? That it was 'the truth'? I know it wasn't and he knew that as well as I did. Billy's hand clenched the steering wheel so hard, his knuckles turned white and I swallowed hard.

"Billy-" I began but he didn't let me finish.

"Who is he?" he asked through gritted teeth.

"Wha-what? What do you mea-"

"Look, I know there's someone else, okay? You don't gotta lie to me about it," he snapped, breaking off into swearing too explicit to repeat.

My eyes had widened to the size of saucers and I bit my lip so hard blood pooled on the surface in droplets.

"That's not it! Not at all!"

"Really? Then why have you been avoiding me, huh? Cancelling dates, sneaking out of the house when you think no one's watching? I know you've been meeting someone!"

"Billy, I-"

He spun the wheel then, making us come to an abrupt stop on the curb before he cut the engine and whipped around to face me. I flinched at the sudden movement and suddenly, I saw Billy's eyes soften.

This time, he was the one to stutter, falling short as briefly, he let his head fall to the steering wheel. His baby blue orbs fluttered shut and after a beat of silence, I slid over to him in my seat and reached out a hand to rest on his back. My fingers moved in comforting circles through the thin layer of clothing that separated our skin and I felt him relax finally before he lifted his head up, facing me.

"Billy, baby, you know I'd never do that to you, okay? You know me better than that," I told him softly, caressing his jaw with a gentle touch, "How could I? I..."

I couldn't help but trail off then, not able to find the words after all. I'd never really told him. I'd felt it for months now though, ever since the moment our eyes met, as cheesy as that sounded. Gazing into those cerulean pools of blue, for the first time since meeting him, I finally let the words spill from my mouth.

"I love you."

His eyes widened and suddenly, I was unsure if it was the right thing to tell him. If maybe, by divulging that, that somehow I had made a mistake. But instead of replying, he took me by surprise and let his lips crash into mine, letting his kiss do all the talking.

And with the taste of his mouth on mine, no words needed to be said. Because I knew he loved me back, it was in every single little thing about our relationship - from the very beginning. Billy was never good with words - but I knew.

I just knew.
