Author's Note: Above is the artwork I created for this had it been a fanfic as initially intended. Hope you enjoy the one shot! :)

I couldn't help but smile to myself as the humid New Mexico breeze blew the sandy-brown curls from his forehead, tousling them to a point where even a photographer for Vogue would be put to shame. Glancing to my left then, I saw Isobel smirking at me and tore my gaze away, rolling my eyes at the devious look plastered to her face. Yes, it's true - she's known of my crush on her pseudo-alien-brother for months now, ever since we all started working together to get Max back.

I loved Liz like a sister and would do anything to help her get the happy ending she deserved. Even if that meant being the Igor to her Frankenstein. And of course, spending more time with Michael was an...added bonus. Not that he saw me that way, of course. He had his own issues to deal with, his own scars from previous heartbreaks. Not to mention I wasn't totally sure if he was off-limits or not seeing as he was kind-of-sort-of seeing Maria. Maybe...I don't know, that whole thing was confusing to me. And...I'd never really had the nerve to ask for a clarification.

It's not as if we were all that close to where it'd be PC to ask that. Isobel, on the other hand, had no problem dropping hints to Michael. To which, of course, I admonished her time and time again. I had nothing to worry about though because as drop-dead gorgeous as Michael was...he was a little slow. And needless to say, he still had no clue I felt anything more for him than friendship.

"Are you staring at him again?" a voice said from behind, making me drop the wrench I'd been holding onto my foot.

I groaned in pain, sending a death glare over my shoulder at Isobel who only smiled mischievously in response.

"No," I lied through my teeth, trying to bite back the pain she'd either purposefully or involuntarily inflicted upon my appendage, "I was actually just going to ask him a question about the uh, um..."

She arched an eyebrow as I made crazy hand gestures, not sure at all where I was going with this.

"You know what? You probably wouldn't understand so I'm just gonna go-" I started to walk away, attempting to get out of this conversation.

But Isobel was quicker, grabbing me by the shoulders to stand closer to her side of the bunker. Liz eyed us while holding a test tube but said nothing, going back to her work as Michael did the same, having never taken notice in the first place - thank goodness.

"Iz, what are you do-" I began only to have her clamp a hand over my mouth before calling out to Michael.

He glanced up at us, quizzically looking from me to Isabelle in the awkward position we were in. If he was confused, he didn't voice it as he strolled over to us. Smears of oil and grease was smattered across the bridge of his nose and his cheeks and I couldn't help but smile over at him.

"Michael, someone has something to tell you," Isabelle said to him suddenly, making my eyes pop wide open in shock, "Okay, well, I better run. Things to buy, alien ex-husbands to destroy from my mind, etc, etc - you kids have fun!"

She sent us both a thumbs-up before skittering out of the underground bunker and up the ladder out into the daylight. My mouth had now dropped open in disbelief, unable to comprehend what Isobel had just done. Meanwhile, Michael was staring at me impatiently.

"So? What was it you wanted to tell me?" he asked expectantly and I felt my mouth go dry at the mere thought of actually admitting what was going on, "Look, I gotta get this done so-"

I waved him off then, feeling relief well up inside of me at not having to confess anything at the moment as I began to walk backwards in the direction of the ladder, "No, no, never mind, it's fine! You know, Isobel, always down for a good joke - it was nothing. Don't even think abou-"

I tripped then over a piece of spaceship, nearly landing flat on my keester. And I would have too if Michael hadn't grabbed onto my arm in that very moment, hoisting me back up. He did it a little fast though and our bodies collided, my eyes drifting up to his beautiful hazel gaze. I sucked in a sharp breath, unable to say or do anything being this close to him. I could feel his warm breathing mingling with mine, we were so close. My knees shook then and I felt them almost give as he caught me yet again, my hands pressing against his firm chest for support.

"Whoa, you okay?" he asked, concern evident in his voice.

Shakily, I nodded, laughing it off, "Just, uh...must have hit that piece of metal harder than intended,"

Oh, wow. Really clever lie. Maybe you should come up with your own handbook to flirting - then everyone could be as single as you.

Silently, I cursed the insolent voice in my head as I backed out of Michael's warm embrace reluctantly. Instead of coming up with an excuse this time, I just bolted, making things that much more awkward I knew. As I stepped out into the fresh sunlight, I could have cursed myself for my stupidity back there. Then again, maybe I could just curse Isobel seeing as how she was standing there, waiting with a huge smile on her face. I glared at her in response and her face fell.

"Oh. So I take it you two didn't have a oh-my-gosh-I'm-so-in-love-with-you-me-too kind of thing?" she asked hopefully and I sighed angrily to which she only shrugged, "Shame. That's what vibes I was getting from those little heart eyes you two keep sending each other. Seriously, sometimes you need to get a room,"

"Yeah, so instead you left us in a room with Liz! You know, one day she will catch on," I snapped and she rolled her eyes, slinging an arm around my shoulders as we walked to her car waiting in the driveway of the junkyard Michael called home.

"Don't worry about her, I just might have another idea..."

I resisted the urge to roll my eyes yet again. It felt like I was getting pulled deeper and deeper into their interplanetary past these days.

But I had a feeling it was only the beginning...
