*Flashback*

"How... how did you get in?" Vander whispered as I pulled off to the side and turned my ear towards where we had entered to listen for any footsteps. "There's guards everywhere."

Vi paced beside me as the two boys worked on getting Vander free.

"It was easy," I answered while taking a step forward. "I found an open window and..."

I stopped myself short when I felt Vi's hand squeeze my shoulder.

"Oh, God. You have to get out. Now," Vander uttered before we heard clapping from behind.

*Present*

"Welcome," Silco's voice sent chills down my bone as we all whirled around, watching the man as he stepped into view directly ahead of us. "You have my congratulations. But I'm afraid this will be a very short reunion."

People filed in a line directly behind Silco, going shoulder to shoulder with one another. I shrank behind the wall a little, eyes casting over to my mother as she leaned over the railing and coughed. She didn't look like the crazy beast I had seen back in the alley, but she didn't look like my mother. She would never let her hair get frizzy or uneven in her ponytail, and her collar was never unbuttoned around her throat. And Bane definitely did not leave her side like he was now, slinking around Silco and curling around him with his body low to the ground.

"Have you heard the rumor?" Silco questioned as a large man with heavy tattoos and a bald head stepped forward with a knife. "Vander the coward fled town with his children. And they were never seen again."

Claggor tried to pry the metal restraint from Vander off before his knife broke in half, and the two shared a look. Vi was tightening the gauntlets around her fists, using her teeth to do so with the last gauntlet, "Claggor, Y/n, see if you can find another way out of here."

We both turned and nodded before scurrying away to do as told.

"You don't have to do this," Vander called out to Vi as she began rounding around the corner and into view.

          "Yes, I do."

I looked over as she began marching out to the man with the knife, my chest tightening up as she did.

"Vi!" Vander and I shared the same cry just as Whiskers squeaked and jumped off my shoulder.

Claggor laid a hand on my shoulder, turning me away just as Vi went face to face with the large man, "She'll be okay. It's Vi."

I hesitated before nodding, and then we heard Whiskers squeak. Looking over, she was holding onto a soft spot in the wall while looking up at us.

"Hit there," I mumbled, pointing towards where her right paw lay. Claggor shrugged before raising the pipe in his hand, waiting for me to pull Whiskers out of the way before beginning to hammer the metal against the wall. The sound of metal hitting skin lapped through the air, along with Mylo's lock picking tool in the mechanism he was trying to bust open. I looked around frantically, doing my best to ignore the fighting just outside.

"Mylo," Vander whispered just as I spotted another pipe laying discarded on the ground nearby. Smiling, I picked it up. "Take a breath. You can do this."

"We're gonna get you out," Claggor mumbled while looking back at the man who had been our father figure for as long as we could remember. I smiled, beginning to hit the spot Whiskers had pointed out and sharing blows with Claggor. As we worked and Vi fought, Silco held back Sevika from fighting Vi. Looking over my mother's doubled-over frame, he pulled out another bottle of Shimmer and held it out to her.

"Ready to come out of the shadows?" he asked, watching her golden tired eyes find his before going down to the liquid. She then took it, gulping it down in two heavy breaths and crushing it in her hand just as she roared.

I looked over, the pipe falling out of my hands suddenly when I realized Vi was on her back and trying her best not to get hit. But it was hard due to being exhausted, and I could tell by the way she avoided and stumbled. She punched the man in the gut when he had tried to hit her, knocking him back and away from her. And then a larger frame loomed over him, grabbing him by the waist before tossing him over the side. My mother glowered down at Vi as her eyes widened and she stumbled to her feet, holding the bloody gauntlets up.

"Mylo, hurry!" Vander cried as I stepped around the corner and stared with a slacked jaw. My mother let out a roar as her eyes flicked from Vi and the gauntlets. But she didn't move. Vi ran forward with a cry, leaping into the air to hit her from above. But Mother caught her by her throat, and I let out a gasp.

"Mother, no!" I cried while holding out a hand helplessly towards Vi as she rasped and tried to kick free.

"Silco! Let her go!" Vander roared from his seat as I slumped against the side of the entrance to the room. Tears were forming in my eyes, and I let out a sob as Bane growled and began walking around Silco with his discolored eyes pointed between my mother's legs right at me. "This is between you and me!"

"You had your chance!" Silco shouted back. Mother sneered before chucking Vi across the bridge, her body tumbling before stopping on her side. And then her eyes found mine, and I began running. Grabbing Vi by her shoulders, I pulled her up and began to drag her away from Mother as she walked towards us. Bane crept from behind, head low with his lips turned away from shining teeth. I let out a cry as I threw Vi into the room first before slumping against the door, pushing it as my mother roared and hurled her body forward along with Bane. But they were too late--their bodies thumped against the metal just as I latched it shut and leaned against it.

Sobs escaped my lips as my body lurched with it, holding my hand to my mouth as Vi leaned up against the door next to me while loosening the one gauntlet from around her fist.

"You did good," Vander whispered as soon as Mylo had gotten one of his cuffs freed and moved to the next. "You both did."

Vi laid her free hand on my shoulder, and I trembled while looking over at her. Her eyes watered up before she brought me into a close hug, her arms wrapped around my neck as she held me close.

"You did so well, Cupcake," she muttered into my ear while smoothing down the back of my hair. I coughed violently, slowing my sobbing down a little before beginning to hiccup. "You did so good."

We pulled away, looking between one another as my mother pounded against the door behind us. Our faces were inches apart, and I couldn't help but feel the same fluttering sensation within my chest. But this time I didn't ignore it--I breathed it in as Vi smiled lightly down at me. Bane and my mother snarled as they pounded their bodies against the door, rocking Vi and me apart some as we looked up at the lock beginning to break. Looking between one another a final time, we heard Claggor finally break through the wall and Mylo unlock the last cuff holding Vander. We each looked between one another, relief flooding our entire systems before--the door blew inwards.
