Flashback (Still in Santi's POV)
NOTE: all my flashbacks will be in italics
The worst thing that could happen is having to wait for someone to return. It gets worse when you've been waiting for hours. Being the youngest is always hard. Staying at home with the nanny or your mother, whilst the rest of your family goes out. But it's not just any outing, it's going on missions.
Tonight was one of those nights when my mother and I were waiting for papa and Elias to return. My mother holds me in her arm, resting my head against her chest only to hear her racing heartbeat.
Welled-up tears are sitting in my eyes - not daring to move my eyes because if I do, the well would erupt. If my mother can feel something bad happening, I can too. I can feel the sting in every part of my body, my chest tightening as we wait for the long hours of their return.
"Mama?"
"Yes, mi hijo." I look up at my mother's teary eyes, I wipe them away with my hand because nothing is more painful than seeing your mother cry.
"They will come back, right? Elias and papa will come back?"
"Si Santi. They will come soon." She kisses the top of my head but her voice sounds so broken as if she wasn't sure herself if they would return.
But we both knew that something happened from the time they were taking. I knew it, I could feel it, sense almost that if they walk right through that door then it's destruction for all of us. We were sitting by the window which was overlooking the driveway, waiting for them. Mama kept checking her watch, I kept a look outside.
Mama didn't want Elias to go with papa. But Elias insisted so much that they couldn't say no to him. Papa always says that he is old enough to go with him on missions but like every mother, our mama didn't think it was right.
"¿dónde están ustedes dos?" (Where are you two?) I could hear my mother mutter under her breath in Spanish, only worrying the both of us.
"Mama they will come back, I know they will come back. Me and Elias still need to build our lego house." I try to reassure her but a young boy like me probably won't be able to give that much reassurance.
"I know sweetie, Elias said he'll come back and build it with you straight away. I'm sure they'll pull up soon."
Just as mama finishes her words, a car pulls up on the driveway so speedily, not thinking about parking straight, Both of us jolt right up, snapping our heads to each other. My heart beats. It beats rapidly, it's hurting.
I see papa open the door in a hurry. But Elias didn't come out yet. Mama runs outside and I stay, watching through the window. Then I see it.
The blood.
Dripping.
It only belonged to one person.
And my mother's scream said it all.
How do I feel? I don't know. All I can see right now is a bloody body being carried by my father with my mother crying her eyes out and running back inside. Everything feels numb within me now, my little self, my small heart isn't able to take it.
Heavy chest, wet eyes already, body trembling, hearing the screams and cry of mama, waiting for the body to enter the room. Destined to see my brother but it wasn't the way I wanted to greet him. Papa enters the room carrying Elias' lifeless body and placing him on the floor.
