Story of a Hat

Ranger Marsh has had his hat for as long as he could remember, and it showed. The hat was dotted with stains and a bite had been taken out of the brim, but he wouldn't trade it for the world. The pictures on his wall showed a little, gap-toothed green bunny proudly holding up a polished brown hat. The hat had been a gift  from his grandfather, and it has stayed with him ever since.

He'd worn it at his wedding, much to his wife's chagrin, and at the birth of his daughter. Ranger Marsh is 90% sure that Tweaky's never seen him without his hat nearby. Maybe that's why he'd had it for so long. Nothing in his life had lasted forever; Creatures living in the swamp came and went, relatives grew old and died, his wife left, and his little Tweaky grew up. He changed too. Now every morning, his joints cracked like thunder whenever he got up, and he didn't have the energy to fight with creatures whenever Peso needed to give them
a check-up, but his hat still stayed the same, more or less.

Every little mark on his hat was still there from the streaks of oil from Tweak's first invention gone wrong to the bite on the brim from an alligator on his first day on the job, and in his eyes, there was nothing more beautiful.
