Another dogfight

The bright white stars scattered across the black landscape of space just outside the ship window. Bo-Katan sat at the controls of her ship as she steered us back to Kalevala. I was sitting in a co-pilot seat just across the aisle from Din, and Grogu was just behind him in his pram.

My fingers fiddled with the cold mythosaur pendant that hung around my neck. I couldn't help the way that my heart was beating a little too fast and that my chest was aching with misplaced grief. Din had almost died, twice, and I felt powerless to stop it. I couldn't bear the thought of losing him, and I don't know what I would do if I did.

"Bring us to our ship and we'll be on our way. You will forever have my gratitude." Din said, cutting through the silence of the ship.

"I would invite you in for a feast, but I'm guessing that helmet isn't coming off again." Bo-Katan said. She was right, and if that helmet coming off meant that Din would have to go back in the living waters, then I guess I'll just have to accept that I won't see his face again.

"This is the way." Din replied

"This is the way." Bo-Katan mirrored.

Grogu then babbled something that sounded almost like "this is the way." I turned over my shoulder to look at him as my lips turned up into a smile, he was getting closer and closer to talking by the day. It won't be long until he says his first word. I looked over at Din to see him staring back at me, he gestured with his head towards the kid and I could see the happiness in his body language.

Before any of us could say anything, an explosion hit against the side of the ship and caused it to shake aggressively. I gasped and clutched onto the control panel beside me.

"We took a hit." Din said

"Somethings coming up on us fast. It looks like a squadron of TIE interceptors." Bo-Katan said as green blaster bolts flew past the ship.

"How close are we to Kalevala?" Din asked

"Not far." Bo-Katan replied

"Get us back there and I'll reinforce from the N-1. Can you evade them?" Din said

"Our shields aren't gonna hold. I need you to back them off." Bo-Katan said

Din stood up from his seat just as another blasted bolt hit the ship. He grunted as he stumbled to the side slightly. He caught his footing and made his way over to the chair behind me that controls the blaster cannon.

I turned away from Din and looked back out the front window, the planet of Kalevala was slowly coming into view, which gave me the smallest amount of relief.

"Where'd they come from?" Din asked

"I've scugged off a lot of Imperial warlords. They tend to get mad when you hijack their ships." Bo-Katan replied

"Now you tell me." Din sighed

We flew closer and closer to the planet until we were flying into the atmosphere and through the thick clouds below. I occasionally turned my head to check up on Grogu as the ship rattled and shook from side to side, though he didn't look scared in the slightest.

"Do you want me to come with you?" I called back to Din as we approached the Mandalorian castle.

"I don't know, Cyar'ika. I won't be able to support us both in this jump." Din said in concern.

"You won't have to. Jedi, remember?" I said, referring to just how far I can fall thanks to the force.

"Are you sure?" Din asked again, I could hear the worry and hesitation in his voice.
