" the end. "

A MONTH LATER

I SIT AT my desk in silence, sipping on my cup of coffee as I write an email to send to one of Rainer's new business partners.

"September 2, 2031.." I mumble to myself, typing in today's date and watching each letter and number appear on the screen.

Rainer's sitting at his own desk. He takes occasional glances at me to which I respond to with a smile and for some reason, he seems off.

Is it his tie? Did I not fix it properly this morning?

Or maybe it's the different colored suit he's wearing today, I can't lie it looks awfully good on him.

I shrug it off as exhaustion, after all, it's already late in the evening and the employees are slowly starting to sign out of the office.

I don't know how long I've been sitting here. Too long, I think, and I let a yawn escape my mouth. I squint my eyes, trying to focus them on the brightly lit screen as the caffeine makes its way down my throat.

Rainer groans, clearing his throat and I watch him stand up from his chair and walk out the door. He slams it behind himself, the loud sound bounces off of the walls and shakes the room, making me flinch.

"Can't even be gentle for a change, huh?" I scowl, continuing on with my work.

In the past few weeks, Rainer has thankfully improved his attitude. At least, a bit. Since that moment in the art gallery, he swore to be nicer to employees for me and I can't quite say he's been living up to it.

Though, I don't mind, it's the thought that counts and I'm happy he isn't firing one person every two days.

I sigh, setting my cup down beside my laptop and picking up my phone to see a few messages from Salem. I answer them quickly and by the time I'm done, Rainer comes back with a stack of papers in his hand.

I scrunch my eyebrows, my gaze follows his figure as he sits back down at his desk and types on his keyboard.

Something is off, I just don't know it. Not yet, at least.

I pick up my phone and check my calendar, seeing if I'm missing any important meetings or trips though nothing comes up.

September 2. There's something about the date that I can't seem to wrap my finger around.

Running a hand through my hair, I deeply sigh and swivel in my chair, reaching for a stack of files in my lower drawers.

When I turn back to face my laptop, I'm met with Rainer's lower stomach behind my screen. I raise my chin to look at him, a small smile is plastered on his face and I notice he's holding a few pieces of paper.
