Chapter 48 - Newborn Army

When I get home, Dad is standing on the steps with Alice.

"Yes, scout's honor," Alice laughs.

"Okay, Alice, don't be a stranger."

"Okay."

Dad goes back into the house and I look at Alice.

"Your alibi for the battle is all arranged."

"Really?"

"I told your father that our whole family's going camping this weekend, so you and I are having a sleepover at my house."

I nod.

"Charlie's going fishing, anyway."

"Charlie? You guys are on first name basis now?"

"Me, he likes.  Actually, you and Edward will have the house to yourselves tonight."

"Like alone?"

"We're all going hunting.  Powering up for the battle."

I am not sure how I feel about this.

"You're welcome."

After dark, I head over to the Cullens but when I reach the top of the steps, Edward appears at the door and opens it.

"What are you doing outside? What's wrong?"

"Nothing."

I follow him up to his room and am surprised to see a double bed taking up most of the room.

"There's a bed."

"I thought you might need one to sleep in."

"I think an air mattress would have sufficed."

I sit down on the bed, putting my backpack on the floor.

"Is this too much?"

"No.  No, it's perfect.  I wanna ask you something."

"Anything."

"Okay, marriage is the condition for you to change me yourself, right?"

"Yes," he smirks though I sense a 'but.'

He sits in front of me on the bed.

"Okay.  I wanna negotiate my own condition."

"Anything you want.  It's yours."

"You promise?"

"Yeah."

I sigh.

"Okay."

I put my hand on his shoulder and pull him close before I begin kissing him.

He stops and makes a face.

"Bella.  No."

He pulls away.

"But you said that you wanted me to have every human experience."

"Not ones that will risk killing you."

"You won't.  And everyone says once I'm changed all I'll want is to slaughter the whole town."

"That part doesn't last forever."

"I want you.  While I'm still me.  While I still want you this way."

I can see he's agonising over it but this isn't something I'm going to drop.

"It's too dangerous."

"Try.  Just try.  I'll do whatever you want.  I'll marry you.  Just try."

He moves to kiss me but pulls back before he tries again, letting our lips meet and we lie down on the bed.
