Chapter 49 - Underwater Task

~Harry's POV~

It's been a month since we returned to school and I'm standing on the bridge with Hermione, discussing the next task.

"Harry, you told me you'd figured the egg out weeks ago," she says.  "The task is two days from now."

"Really? I had no idea," I respond sarcastically.

"Has Bella figured it out yet?"

"I don't know, I've been avoiding her after what Rita said in the paper."

"You are trying to figure this egg out, aren't you?"

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"It just means these tasks are designed to test you in the most brutal way.  They're almost cruel.  And..."

I turn away from her so she comes round the other side of me.

"I'm scared for you.  You got by the dragons because you got lucky with Norbert.  I'm not sure it's going to be the same this time."

"Hey, Potter!" somebody calls and we turn to see Cedric coming so I walk away.  "Potter!"

"Cedric," I say without stopping but he catches me up so I stop and turn to him.

"How...? How are you?"

"Spectacular."

"Look, I realize I never really thanked you properly for tipping me off about those dragons."

"Forget it.  I'm sure you would've done the same for me."

I turn to leave.

"Exactly."

I stop again.

"You know the Prefects' bathroom on the fifth floor?"

I nod.

"It's not a bad place for a bath.  Just take your egg... and mull things over in the hot water."

He smirks and walks away, leaving me utterly confused.

However, later that night, I take my egg to the Prefects' bathroom and begin running it, with bubbles.  I strip and climb in.

The light shines through the stained glass window and the mermaid image turns and looks at me, moving her hair out of her face.

I turn and look at the egg.

"I must be out of my mind."

I reach over and open the egg which screeches, making me cover my ears so I close it again.

"I'm definitely out of my mind."

I hear giggling and turn to see Merida sitting in a stall.

"I'd try putting it in the water if I were you."

"Merida!"

"Hello, Harry.  Long time no see."

She cranes her head as if trying to get a glimpse of my manhood.

She flies up toward the ceiling.

"I was circling a blocked drain the other day and could swear I saw a bit of Polyjuice Potion."

She stops next to the mermaid window.

"Not being a bad boy again, are you, Harry?"

"Polyjuice Potion? Kicked the habit.  Merida, did you say, 'try putting it in the water?'"

She screams and dives into the water without a splash before popping back up the other side of the pool size bath, coughing and spluttering.

"That's what he did.  The other boy..."
