𝐋𝐄𝐈𝐋𝐀𝐍𝐈 𝐋𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐃 𝐁𝐄𝐈𝐍𝐆 in Hawai'i, but she loved the Outer Banks just as much. What she didn't love was her step-mother and her two kids, who insisted upon moving Leila and her father from The Cut to Figure Eight. She hated Kooks, and she would never, ever associate herself with them. But she was the sunshine in her Pogue friend group, and being with them made her happier than she could even put to words.
The Pogues surfed together, went on their boat, slept at each other's houses and got up into all kinds of trouble. It didn't matter, because it was summer, and they were happy. JJ spent his time antagonizing Leilani, because he not-so-secretly was obsessed with her, but he knew she didn't like him that way.
Every morning at sunrise, Leilani and her golden retriever, Scout, went surfing. JJ joined her some days if he was awake, and Leilani treasured the time they spent together out on the waves. Surfing was her way to escape her step-mother, and her new Kook life. Leilani was a Pogue, and that was that.
