"What's up, idiot."
I was wrapping my arms around the bleach blonde's neck before he could get a breath out. Pulling him close and hugging him tightly. When I pull away the wind rushes past me along with all the other people rushing out onto the New York Streets. Eager to get as far away from the planes they came in on as much as possible.
"It's good to see you too, dumbass."
Caleb's goofy little grin widened, his eyes practically sparkling with mirth. They slid over my right shoulder.
"What's up guys, good to see ya."
"You too, man."
Luka walked forward first, dabbing him up, followed by Juleka who slipped him a side hug.
"Okay, can we get in the cab now it's cold?"
Juleka shivered, tucking a purple lock behind her ear.
"Ya let's go."
Caleb nods and walks around the back of the cab slamming the hood twice to signal the driver to pop the trunk. We follow him to the back. I attempt to grab my bag from Luka's hands but he pulls it away and hoists it in the trunk.
I punch his shoulder to hide my grin. Sliding past him and to the open car door. I shift uncomfortably on the cracked leather seats as Juleka and Luka flank me on either side. There's a slam as the trunk shuts, and a few minutes later Caleb is falling onto the passenger side seat. He shoots me a smirk over his shoulders, and I can't help the cheesy smile that rips through my face so hard my cheeks might hurt later.
"You wanna do the honors?"
"Take us ta the Ritz-Carlton!"
I laid on my accent as heavy as I could muster, causing half-hearted laughter to break through the group as the cab driver pulled away from the airport curb.
"A few months away and you still can slip into the accent."
"She continued to act like a New Yorker in Paris, trust me."
Juleka leaned against the door to look out at the window before she continued.
"How long is the drive by the way?"
Caleb and I share a silent look in solidarity.
"Get me away from this car."
Juleka is the first to shoot out of the cab, almost eating the curb with the force used. Luka is out next looking a bit pale.
"Are all car rides in New York City this... life-threatening?"
Caleb chuckles, sticking cash for the driver between his point and middle finger. I slam the top, and the driver pops the trunk.
"There's a reason we walk most places."
I handed him his suitcase with a mischievous look. Caleb grabbed his and Juleka's and we stepped out onto the front steps of the Ritz. A tall bulky man in a tailored black suit and slick back brown ponytail stepped out of the grand front doors. Juleka and Luka were too busy gawking at their surroundings to notice his approach.
"Hello, Ms. l/n. Welcome back to the Ritz-Carlton. Ms. Morris sent me down for you, she had to step out."
I shoot the stoic man a smile.
"Unsurprising but thank you, we'd love to see the room now so we can get settled in if it's ready."
"Of course right this way. I'll take your bags."
