"So how long do they want us to dance for?"
Adrien had wisely led me out of earshot to a table of intermingled predators and friends. Even now they still watch on, food finished and small talk sparse. The blonde moves us next to a larger group of people slowly dancing, ignoring my question. Taking my hand in his, and placing his other on my lower back, a ghost of deja vu sends shivers down my back.
My free hand naturally finds its way to his upper chest, similar to those around us. Finally, after a bit of glancing around the room uncomfortably, I tear my eyes up to meet him.
Green and for some reason fiery.
"We never talked after the Christmas party."
He is uncharacteristically blunt, and it makes me want to scrunch my nose the way I do when Poppy talks similarly. Now the awkward hug in the Ritz lobby makes sense, he's not just uncomfortable because of his father.
He's uncomfortable because of me.
"I didn't know how to go about it. I- well we both know things about each other we shouldn't."
"I thought you were upset."
His eyes rake over my face discerningly, and he's the first to see my eyes widen in shock. I let out a breathy response.
"No...well, I was at first but because of the idea of you risking your life all the time terrifies me. But we both have our secrets so I'm not mad about you keeping it from me."
He nods, blonde hair flowing in the action just slightly. I find myself focusing on how the light hits it until I'm sucker punched at the memory of me pulling at it during our makeout session on my couch.
"I'm sorry I never told you I knew about yours. But I promise I tried to look out for you when we were with everyone else."
His words pull an achy feeling from my heart at their sincerity. I tighten my hold on his hand a bit, preparing to ruin the moment with a single question.
"Did you uh...tell your dad about it?"
"No, I can't trust him with something that important."
He doesn't seem surprised by the question. Simply continuing to sway us, narrowly avoiding other couples. But the statement itself makes my heart pang in sympathy.
"Then all of this is all on him and Poppy then. That can't be good."
"Might want to file in my Aunt into that as well, I can't for the life of me understand why they came. Felix hates occasions like these."
I sniff, halfway between a huff in a laugh.
"You hate them too yet you're here."
"My father gave me little room for debate."
I cast a glance at Felix sitting stiffly across the room. He is burning a hole into his lap with a glare while his mom chats away.
"I don't think he had much room either."
"You seem closer now. Another addition to the roster?"
The question stuns me, my breath stolen from my lungs. I can feel my eyebrows furrowing before I can slack my expression. He has never spoken to me this way. My answer is clipped.
"No. We just have a mutual agreement to get along."
"Do you remember when I saved you from Chemical when you first moved to Paris?"
The topic change sends me reeling but I take a deep breath and nod.
"I knew when I saw you that I wouldn't be able to stay away, you were just so...you."
