Altgens, a gradaute of North Dallas High School, (1938), did sports writing. By 1940, he worked at the wirephoto office during WWII.

After a stint as a United States Coast Guard (USCG); he was also a "Radio broadcaster". But it was journalism and photography that Altens was known for.

By July, 1944, Altens married Clara B. Halliburton. He got a BA degree, (speech); he studied at night at the Southern Methodist University. Once the couple were settled post WWII, it wasn't until 1959, that Altens, now aged 40, went to Hollywood. He dabbled in acting; print advertising; and modelling. He played "The Secretary of State" in a movie called "Beyond the Time Barrier", (1960), a b sci-fi movie, directed by Edgar George Ulmer, (September 1, 1904-September 30, 1972); Altgens spoke the end lines: Quote: "That's a lot to think about!".
