Chapter 60

Perseus POV: Remember Your Promise
I look at my sister as we reach Avernos, the lake of the dead. Shrieks of pain rattle in my ears. I see the green water full of souls run with the current. Suddenly, an old raspy voice states," Pay to cross, pay to enter, pay to live."
I instantly recognize that the voice belongs to an old fellow who is dressed in a dreary cloak that disguises his body in a shadow. All I can make out are his hollow eyes that are filled with a fire that shows how strong he truly is. I rumble through my pocket as Scorpio asks," Can you take us to the River Styx?"
          " Only if you can pay," the old man replies, clearly thinking that we are nuts because why would four very much alive humans come to the Underworld? Have we come to enjoy the beautiful fatal rivers or the peaceful Groves of Persephone?
         " We can't pay. Is there another way we can get you to ferry us?" Pisces says as she joins the conversation.
        " If you can answer my riddle in one try, I will personally lead you to the river myself," the old fellow replies. Okay I'm not the best at riddles but, let's at least give this one a try. Aphros asks," What if we can't answer your riddle?"
            The fellow continues with," If you can't, all of you will either be sent back to the surface immediately or you will parish," he pauses for a second," Here's the riddle: What creature walks on four legs in the morning, two legs at noon, and three in the evening?"
       Well, we're all done for. I had a good life. I mean with the insane killer and losing my parents, life was good. I seriously have no clue on what that could be. I see my friends in deep thought as I try again to find an answer but, nothing in my brain seems to comply. Suddenly, I see Scorpio slowly smirk. I understand that he has thought of something. Before I can even question him on what it is, he answers," The creature's a man, isn't it?"
Scorpio POV
       As I answer the riddle, I having a strange feeling like I've heard it before.  The fellow looks at me as he realizes what he has gotten himself into. I am pulled from my thoughts as Pisces links hands with me and pulls me towards the boat. It rocks as I get in. I plant myself next to Pisces as the fellow pushes off of the shore. I personally think that this is Charon, the ferryman of the Underworld. Shivers run down my spine as we cross Avernos. Their voices bring a harmony of pain and suffering to my heart but, I somehow feel like I belong here. It's extremely weird. My heart races as the boat stops on the other shore of Avernos. Perseus looks at me and as he and Aphros get out of the boat, he says," Remember your promise."
I gulp as I realize that they are going to fight Cerberus for his spit. I hope that they make it back alive. As Charon pushes off from the bay, we travel forwards towards Acheron, the river of woe. The waters grow thicker as the souls crowd together forming a dark surface. The waters seems to become deeper as we travel upriver. My head whips left as I see pitch black souls arise from the ground and the river. I hear myself whisper," The shadows of the restless dead."
         Where in the world did those words come from? The souls merge together as they swim towards the boat. The souls grab onto the boat as they meet face to face with me and Pisces. I feel her grip on my hand tighten as I fumble through my bag. I pull out a flashlight. 'Maybe they'll disappear in white light,' I think. Instead, when I turn my flashlight on, it shines a dark blue light. I sheepishly grin. But, before I switch it back to white light, I realize that they feed off of the dark light. Once satisfied, they return back to the water and then to the shore. We continue on our way as we reach some sort of marsh. Charon swiftly navigates through it. We are almost there. I can just feel it. I see the water shake and I feel the boat rock. I look around only to see Cerberus, holding two small people in his mouth. Oh no! He's got Perseus and Aphros. Charon senses my worry as he pulls over the boat and says," Your friends are being taken to Hades's palace. Go through the Asphodel fields, pass the three judges, and you will reach the palace. Hurry Hades isn't the merciful type."
" Thank you so much," Pisces replies. We immediately leave our seats and hop onto the sandy beach. We look behind us only to see that Charon and his boat have disappeared. I look at Pisces as I take her hand and run faster than I have ever run. She keeps up even though I am traveling at an inhuman speed, because that's my power. We are off to rescue our friends and hopefully find our ingredients to help save our other friends from death.
