On Wroug, the elLan with the kidnapped spouse had set up displays with local metrics. She wanted to be aware of things that were happening. She observed the growth in data feed traffic, and because she had previously considered what that might mean; she concluded the end was near for her spouse. Lan Governance was going limit data feeds of the event.
She turned off all systems, except protection (because, you know, alien planet) and health (because she did not think she could stay consciousness without it). She initiated a disconnect of her data feed, but Lan Security already locked it (she did not notice it didn't disconnect).
Falling onto the current form of her spouse, she cried a few tears. Standing for eight days is a stress on all bodily functions. Her few tears were all she had to give. She pleaded and pleaded.

She kissed him.
In the other plane where her spouse was; a crude plane swap field held him. He felt the tears because the swap field was sloppy. He felt the kiss. He cried. He was sure this was the end that his wife was kissing him goodbye. Someone had restrained him on a cot. All of his systems forced off. He really had suffered as many Lans do when systems are not present (forced sensory deprivation is the Lan diagnosis).
His captor, a Wroug woman, was quite disgusted.
"I observed none of the rumored capabilities of the Lan at all. It was all just systems, commonly buildable systems. What a waste of time."
Now the alLan was having a crying fit too. "What a weakling."
On a nearby screen, words appear. It was other Lans speaking through a display. The Wroug woman says: What do you want?
"A trade? Well maybe.
Tell me what you have that might interest me.
Yes, yes I understand my situation will be much weaker if he dies.
So tell me, what do you think I want?
