CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

NEWT

The bonfire for the new Greenie was already started when I come out of the dining hall, carrying the huge sheek-kebab plate that Fry had made. I, unbeknownst to anyone, and most importantly, to Fry, pick up two pieces and quickly chew it down.

Don't judge me, it's too delicious.

I set down the plate on the table and pick up the glass of Gally's special drink, with 'secret ingredients' which is not secret to me and Addie anymore.

I remember how intoxicated we had become that night and how much fun we had. I remember the talks that we had and how we totally lost the plot.

I look around and saw the boys having fun. There is food, drinks, hollers, jokes and friendly-fights. Even Alby is laughing.

For this one time, we actually become the teenager that we are. We are not supposed to be so serious. We are not supposed to have so much pressure on our shoulders. We are not supposed to be mortally threatened. We are not supposed to be here. We are bloody teenagers, whose lives are snatched by those knob heads, Creators.

Addie is not there.

Is she not coming?

The Greenie looks so lost, sitting alone by the log, that I go to him.

Actually I want to divert my mind from her.

I plop down beside him and hands him Gally's drink.

"What is this?" he ask apprehensively.

"This grows some hair on chest."

He takes the glass from me, hesitantly and takes a gulp.

He instantly chokes on it and spit it out. I snort.

"What the hell is this?" He asks, coughing.I take the glass from him, checking it out. "Dont know. Gally's secret recipe. Not many can drink it."

"Understandably. Yeah well, he's still a jerk."

I chuckle. "He might be a bugger, but he saved your life today." I remember how Addie reacted to the Glade was so much different than this Greenie. He was in flight mode, and she was fight and flight mode. More inclined to fight mode. I smile faintly.

"Trust me," I say remembering my jump off the walls, the deaths and the Grievers, "the Maze is a dangerous place."

"Why? What's out there?" I take a sigh, "We call 'em Grievers. Vicious creatures, only comes out at night. That's all we know. No one ever lived to tell about them."

"There were a few boys coming from the maze."

"Those are the Runners." I point to Minho, Ben and the others, sitting together. Minus Addie. "The best of all. Strongest of us. They work hard, risk their lives everyday, going out there to solve the Maze. So that we can get outta here. So it's kind of our job to help each other living until we get a way out."

The Greenie looks down to the grass. It is taking him a few moments for the enormity of the situation to sink in."How long?" he mutters.

"Two years. I've been one of the first to come up. Along with Alby, Minho and Nick."

The Greenie just nods. "So there's no girl here? All boys?"

"No." I chuckle. "There is one. Addie. Um..actually her name is Adelaide. She's come up two months before you. She's the toughest of all. She'll kick your arse and you won't even know."

The Greenie just smiles. Then suddenly he squints at something behind me. "Then I guess Adelaide's here." He says.

I turns around to see her pick up a glass and sit down by Chuck, smiling as that little shank, talks away animatedly.

"Why she's sitting alone?" the Greenie asks.

"Not a fan of crowd. People in general."

"She seems fine with Chuck." He says.

"She loves him. He thinks her of his elder sister." I say, remembering Chuck tell me that a few days ago.

Gally suddenly hollers for the Greenie and he looks at me for help.

I shrug, knowing that it's inevitable to save any Greenie from Gally. The Greenie's eyes fill with dread and he unwillingly goes to him.

I look at Addie, hoping that I can catch her eye, but she doesn't meet my eyes. She either looks at Chuck or she looks at the fight.

Suddenly, a loud thud makes me look away from her. The Greenie falls face front on the floor. And Gally yells in victory. Slowly the Greenie got up and yells, "Thomas! My name's Thomas. Its- it's Thomas!"

I smile.

Took him fast enough.

Soon everyone chant and holler his name. Addie smiles faintly and takes a large gulp of the drink, emptying it and gets up, walks towards the Homestead.

I sigh, knowing well that I've missed my chance on talking to her.

Maybe tomorrow.

A/N:

this chap is short, because if i had merged it with the next chapter, then that chapter would have become too long. and i really have no excuse on why it is so trashy.
