CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE
ADELAIDE
It was as if I and Newt were 'nightmare- buddies.' Sometimes, we wake up to each other's screaming, and console to each other. We often cannot sleep after that, so we stay awake, talking about the most random things.
Newt says that he dreams about him fall off the wall or Grievers or just blue labs, and white lab coat wearing people prodding him with needles. One night, as I settled down beside him, leaning into his shoulder, he told what he dreamt of.
"I saw you. A little you." He says, his voice scratchy after screaming a few moments before.
"Me?" I ask groggy from sleep.
"Yeah. We were in a kind of cell, with bunk beds and all. You and me. Suddenly some guards burst in, pulling you away. I tried to get to you but they held me back. You being you," he chuckles, "fought back. You kicked one on his nerve. You paralyzed him. You punched the other. I was fighting to get to you soon. Some more guards came and held the both of us tightly. One of them jabbed you with a syringe and you fell down, not breathing." He is breathing heavy.
I cup his cheek, rubbing my thumbs over his soft yet damp cheeks. "Hey, look at me." Itilt his head, making him to look at me. "I'm right here. I'm not going anywhere."I wrap my arms around his waist and snuggle into his chest. He hugs me, pulling me closer.
"Listen to my heartbeat okay? Focus on that."
I tightly hold onto him, knowing from personal experience how a warm hug actually helps any situation. My gaze falls on the sky outside. It was almost dawn. The sun's faint rays are penetrating from the clouds and the birds have begun chirping.
"Why so tensed?" I smile softly, missing Newt's warmth as I brake the hug.
His eyes flickers behind me and soon meets mine. "A dangerous place that is." He mumbles.
My insides fills with warmth.
He cares about me.
"I'll be fine and moreover, Minho is there."
"I know. That's why I'm not going in with you." He says, fidgeting with his hands again. I hook my little finger with his and smile up to him. "Stop getting anxious." I whisper to him and a faint blush rises to his cheeks as I smile, biting on my lower lips.
"I worry about you. Though- though I know that you are more than perfectly capable to take care of yourself. But I just can't seem to stop worrying."
Awwwwwwwww....
My heart. My heart.
I steps closer to him and tiptoe. I lean in and my lips hovers over his cheek.
