Fariha

Something unexpected happened a few days after Iman was born.

A rishta came for Dua. It was for Kasim Mustafa Butt, the son of Zafar's boss. According to Zafar, he was twenty-four, freshly graduated with a law degree and an incredibly bright, well-mannered guy. In other words, Zafar didn't seem to have a problem with this marriage alliance.

I was given the duty of talking to Dua, alone, and asking her how she felt about it. I went into the bedroom that she shared with her mother and twin sister. "Dua, can we talk?"

She looked up from her textbook. She had only two more final year exams left, and she had been constantly studying hard for it. Mahnoor, on the other hand, just looked for an excuse to avoid studies, even if it meant doing housework, which she was currently doing now. "Of course, Bhabi." She moved her books and papers aside to make room for me to sit.

I closed the door and walked over to the bed, taking a seat on the edge.

"What's up, Bhabi?" She genuinely looked clueless.

"Dua, I'm going to ask you something, but don't think, for even a second, that you are being pressurised or forced into something." I began.

"Is this about marriage?" She asked, raising an eyebrow.

"How did you...?"

"Because once a girl finishes her university, or even when she hits her twenties, she starts hearing this topic."

She's not wrong about that. I smiled. "I get that. I know it's hard to believe that I was once in my twenties as well, and that I have been through similar issues." Well, actually, I had suggested my own marriage to my parents, rather than the other way around. They'd wanted me to wait until I finished my medical education, but I was too blinded by Umair's 'love'.

She laughed. "Oh, come on. Nobody can say that you're even a day older than twenty-two."

"I'm flattered, but that is one huge exaggeration." I glanced down at the white and pink floral bedsheet. "Yes, Dua. This is about marriage. A marriage proposal has come for you, and the family wants to come and see your parents about it formally."

"Oh!" She blinked, surprised. "It's not that man that Taimoor Bhai...?"

"No. Trust me, you parents and Bhai won't ever even consider something that you're against." I reached out and squeezed her hand. "It's actually Kasim, Zafar's boss's son."

Something changed in her expressions then. Her cheeks turned pink, and her eyes lowered, almost shyly. "K-Kasim?"

"You know him. He helped you out the other day, when your phone died and you were walking home from university?"

She nodded. She had tanned skin, naturally straight hair that ended at her waist, which she always braided up, and both her and Mahnoor had light freckles. Both the twins were very pretty, but Dua looked more innocent, somehow.

"Are you okay with this proposal, or should I get your Bhai to talk to Mr Butt and say that you're not ready for marriage?"
