Fawad

It was weird being in Lahore without Mina.

Especially when my car passed by the Sheikh family home on my way to my parents' home from he airport. I was sitting in the back seat, basking in the cool air conditioned air of the car. A small smile appeared on my face as I saw the familiar home where I had spend countless hours, mostly with Arhaan. But despite that, the moment I saw the home, I thought of one word: Mina.

I almost expected her to be standing at the gate, giving me her usual adorable smile.

But as the car got closer to my parents' house, my heart began to sink. This home didn't feel right without Ammi, and I hoped that she came back here soon. She was still at the hospital, but because it was still early in the morning, Papa had advised me to go home, freshen up and maybe rest a little before going to the hospital to see her. I wanted to immediately go to the hospital, but I didn't want to give Papa further stress by arguing with him.

When the car pulled up into the car porch of my parents house, it felt like a homecoming, yet simultaneously it wasn't. It was home, yet now my home wasn't complete without Jasmina, Hania and Iman.

I'd barely stepped out of the car, when I heard yelling.

"Mamu!"

A moment later, my two older nephews were running through the front door towards me.

"Assalam Alaikum." I gave them a warm smile, putting an arm around each of their shoulders. "Ma Sha Allah, kuch maheenon main hi kad nikal liya hai lagta hai."

*"Ma Sha Allah, it seems like you've had a growth spurt within just months."

"Walaikum Assalam!" They both said, excitedly.

Fari appeared in the doorway, her face grim and miserable. "Bhai, Assalam Alaikum."

"Walaikum Assalam." Striding forward towards her, I gave her a one armed hug, stroking the back of her head.

Her shoulders shook in silent sobs. "Bhai, Ammi... She'll be okay, right?"

"In Sha Allah." I whispered. "Papa said that we shouldn't worry."

"Papa sent me home last night with the boys. I stayed here with Zaid, Omar and Saad." She sniffed.

"Where's Zafar?"

"He had to home to be with his parents and siblings. He couldn't leave them alone there, especially since their home is so far away from here."

"Understandable."

"When he comes, we'll go to the hospital together, and he can look after the kids for a while." She pulled back. "How are you? How's Bhabi?" Her eyes widened. "Oh, and how are my beautiful nieces?"
