It was good though, he realised nature must be ready for the rainfall to ensure their beautiful colours were kept intact.
His face was littered in dirt from his hard work today, his hair already beginning to grease over. Taehyung is a cave digger alongside his childhood best friend, Jimin.
It wasn't his first choice of jobs but since the options were so scarce and money was so low, he had no choice.
Humans were paid unfairly, receiving half the wage that a vampire would meaning it was much harder to live here.
Humans lived in Moon Hollow simply because they were granted protection, the city being walled off. There was a strict law of feeding consent, meaning that vampires can only feed from tagged humans.
Vampires, they ruled over the humans. They were merely food but years of development called for the better treatment of them. The population grew so little that they had to take care of the humans and even then so few were actually able to offer their blood.
Tagged humans would have their blood tested to ensure the safety of their blood content. Certain blood types are poison to vampires whereas some are the most satiating.
Taehyung turned when he felt a tap on his shoulder "you heading back in?" He heard Jimin's soft voice enter his ears.
He gave a small smile "the caves become flooded when it rains, we can go back in but let's be careful." Taehyung replied and began a slow descent into the dark caves.
It was safe to do so, having steps and ladders to let workers enter and leave with ease.
"We only found a little today." Jimin spoke while trailing behind Taehyung, now flicking on his flash light.
Jimin spoke of a rare compound deep within the caves, it was expensive stuff but they never actually knew what it was used for. Taehyung pressed his lips together "we haven't come across a lot in quite a while, i'm thinking theres none left." He gave his opinion.
They both trudged down to their work spots they had picked for the day.
Jimin huffed, launching his pick axe against the cave wall, feeling the usual ache in his arms. "There has to be more."
Jimin spoke with a small voice, holding back any emotions. Taehyung looked at Jimin's sullen face "are we just wasting our energy here? We won't get paid anything today." The taller male stated with a low voice.
Both men were severely poor.
The clanking of Jimin's pick axe echoed around the whole cave "you're right... fuck it, let's go." Jimin said, voice now hardened.
The sound of heavy rain caught their attention "we have to leave anyway." Taehyung said with sarcastic chuckle.
They left as quick as they could, holding hands as they made their way home.
Both the Park and Kim family had their small cottages, living just across from each other. It became easy for the two best friends to become reliant on each other.
They went to their separate homes, hugging goodbye and giggling at the fact that they were soaked.
Teahyung stepped into the heat, pushing his hair from his eyes, spotting his parents sat around the table.
His mother rushed to him "oh my baby! You'll catch a cold!" She couldn't help but worry for her youngest. "Eomma, i'm okay." He stated, giving her a boxy smile.
"Hush! Let's get you warm!" She pulled him further into the house and wrapped a warm towel around him.
She helped dry him off before leaving him to take a warm shower and change into some warm clothes. After Taehyung felt warm and comfy, he joined his parents for dinner.
His father sat there with his usual weekly news paper and a cheap cigar in his fingers. "Anything interesting happen?"
Taehyung asked his father while he rested his head in his hand. He heard a sigh come from the older male "another body left the palace. Human." He stated and placed the paper down to the side.
Taehyung gently nibbled his lips from nerves, the only vampires who can get away with killing humans is the king and knights.
"Oh and messengers have crossed the border again, that King has got to be up to something." His father added, now eyeing up the food in front of him and putting his cigar out.
"Have they caught that murderer yet?" His mothers voice asked with concern on her face. "No." His father replied with a sad look.
The small family then ate in silence but Taehyung couldn't help but notice how the portions are getting smaller day by day.
There was no more money left this month, his mother already trying her best to make the food last a little longer. Taehyung had nothing to bring to the table, he had wasted a week finding nothing from those caves.
"Honey, how was work today?" He heard his mothers voice ask, face holding a small amount of hope.
She must have noticed Taehyung's dejected look, as that hope suddenly vanished. "No luck." Taehyung said, eyes suddenly finding the job ad in the newspaper. "That's okay son." His father said, the man already finished his food.
'It's not okay' Taehyung thought, finishing the last of his food and leaning back in his chair.
He helped clean up after that, head filled with thoughts of money. This isn't the first bad month they'd had yet it was just getting worse over time and there's not much he could do about it.
Well... except one thing.
But Taehyung hoped it won't ever come to that. Signing away his life just to become someones food, and he may not even be compatible.
Those who had a blood maid in the family tend to live comfortable lives. However the blood maid lives with the vampire meaning they lose most of their freedom.
Taehyung couldn't fathom a day without seeing his parents, Jimin and his other friend Jin. He pouted as he watched his parents discuss their financials in hushed tones.
With a pained heart, Taehyung knew what he needed to do...
