Though the sun beat down on the Glade, Newt still kept his overshirt on. It was odd for him to not bake in the sun with it on, but no one thought anything of it. Of course they didn't. He, amongst the Leader and the Keepers, had been here for the longest and they knew how bad his depression had gotten. If it hadn't been for Minho and Alby, he would be long gone.

Edith arrived a little bit more than a year after him, give or take a few months. The days were hard to keep track of. When she arrived, he had looked down at her small, fragile frame and seen himself. She was terrified, just like he was. While giving her the tour, she remained quiet, only nodding every once in a while. He couldn't tell if this was a product of shyness, anxiety, or the horrible internal thoughts of taking her life after being told she had to live in a grassy square with nearly twelve boys. It was at the end of the tour when the two had decided to grab lunch when she finally spoke.

"Shall we grab some lunch then, Greenie? I think Fry-" He tried to sound cheery, tried to cover up the emotional scars that would never fade.

"I think my name is Edith, actually," She offered him a smile, her hair falling in front of her face to cover up her heated cheeks. "Well, it's the only name I remember so I think it's my name."

He offered a grin. Edith, so much better than the ridiculous name of Greenie. "Edith it is then," He nodded. "As long as that's what you want to be called." Acting so positive was exhausting, but the name was truly lovely. She smiled graciously and nodded before the two headed off to the Dining Hall.

It didn't take her long to become more extroverted, but even then the two grew closer naturally, and after a while, she seemed like the only real person he had, the only person he could spend hours talking to about nothing. She was his comfort. He finally felt somewhat at peace, but then he started to realize that his sense of comfort from her was due to his adoration of her. How he wanted to always be with her, to hold her, to hear her reassuring voice that was as smooth as honey. He was growing too dependent.

After a year of her arrival in the Glade, he began to not care of his need for her. To him, it seemed she was growing fond of him as they always spent their time together. She had become a Med-Jack after a few short days, and with his room located next to the building, she was always stopping in. They'd grab breakfast together after he would wake her up, meet up in the middle of the day for lunch, and once again for dinner. They were practically inseparable, until Thomas came.

Newt wasn't an imbecile; he knew that a new Greenie always sparked everyone's interest. He had no problem with Thomas' arrival, his clumsy heroic nature, or the fact that the boy had asked every question anyone has every thought of. Tommy was a good friend of his. His problem was that Edith seemed to be more intrigued than the average Glader, and he thought he was starting to lose her.

The Greenie arrived on the night of a planned Bonfire. As the night progressed, he saw the only-girl less and less. She was already there when he showed, talking to the Chuck with another boy. When she saw the blond, she waved but didn't leave the conversation, so Newt made himself a spot by the fire alone. He was there for quite a while until the Greenie sat down next to him.
