The Trauma Centre was cold. And depressing with its shiny metallic furniture and off white walls and ceiling. The air was grievous and lamentable. Various nurses and residents were pacing the hall in their grey and sky blue scrubs respectively.
The waiting room was full of people with hope etched to their face. Everyone wanted their loved ones safe. The anticipation on their faces whenever a doctor came in to update them about their father or mother or son or daughter or wife or a best friend, it was heartbreaking.
No one and I mean no one deserves to be in a position where they have to watch their loved ones in a hospital bed fighting for their life.
Even then some lives are saved and some...
When Amarra made her way to the Trauma Centre, she was frantically searching for Liam. Her emotions were all over the place. She was so much absorbed in grief that she didn't even notice Derek who was standing in the doorway of the trauma centre. Derek had to chase her halfway to the hall to stop her from going any further. She was uncontrollable. But who could blame her??
"Amarra listen to me." Derek held her by her shoulders trying his best to not feel her pain. Because if he did, if he felt even one drop of her pain, he wouldn't be okay. And he has to be okay, for Amarra.
"Where is he??? Where is Liam?? Is he dead??" Amarra said in between sobs. She was looking everywhere except Derek. She couldn't bring herself to look at him because if she did and saw even a single emotion of pity towards her, she would have a major meltdown. And she didn't want that. She has things to do first. She has to see Liam and then she has to find Valerie.
"You have to calm down first. Then we'll talk." Derek assured her as best as he could. Meanwhile, everyone around was staring at them in horror.
Amarra had an 'I-am-annoyed-with-your-silence' expression on her face. She jerked Derek's hands off her and shouted with every ounce of power that she possessed in that moment, "Just tell me where he is. I can take it. He's my best friend. I have every right to know."
Derek jerked backwards a little and he knew that Amarra is onto the third stage of grief, that is anger. The first stage being shock and second being tears. He knew better than to hold it any longer.
"Liam's in surgery." He paused while Amarra's face softened. "He's alive and if the surgery is successful he'll live."
Amarra staggered backwards to the wall and swung down covering her her face with her hands. She didn't say anything.
Derek crouched down next to her and placed his hand on her knee, giving it a little squeeze. Amarra removed her hands from her face revealing tears all over. Derek's heart shattered seeing her so vulnerable and weak that she would melt in his arms any second. He wanted to embrace her in a comfortable hug and tell her that everything will be fine. But Derek didn't know that. There was a fair chance that Liam won't survive the surgery.
Amarra looked at him longingly, her eyes were glowing with fresh tears, "How did this happen?? How did Liam end up here?? Oh God Liam sweet Liam." She sobbed. "He is the kindest person I've ever met. How could this happen to him??"
Her eyes were questionable and she wanted answers. But there were no answers to how good people like Liam ended up in such tragic situations.
"It was an accident Amarra. We're told that he was on his way here from the airport when the cab driver slept during the ride. And the car slammed into a wall or something."
Amarra processed every word and immediately remembered Valerie's message from the night before, "Liam's landing at 4 a m. What an idiot!! He should've taken the 7 a.m. flight. It would've been easy to pick you both. Anyway he'll find a ride."
