Notes:

So this is different... I hope you guys like it I have no clue what happened here and how my muse ended up going down the road she did...

Also the plan had been to post this earlier in the week and potentially in two chapters instead of one, but I spent most of the week in bed with a stomach flu so you get one long one with delay.

He hadn't expected to feel as relieved as he had when receiving the phone call from Laurel letting him know that they'd found Oliver, and that he was back home. Badly injured, but alive. His entire body had sagged as the tension from the past days had left him, and he'd almost fallen onto the couch behind him. Oliver was safe. He was back home with Sara. His baby would not have to raise her daughter alone. Mila would not have to grow up without her father. Oliver wouldn't miss out on his daughter's life. When he was already forced to miss out on his son's. Good, this was good.

He, unfortunately, wasn't sure what was going to happen with Chase, though. Joanna had given her statement, and she'd been very convincing, just like his former colleagues had confirmed, but going after the D.A. was not an easy feat. And they weren't going to accuse him of anything without further proof. It was frustrating, but understandable. Maybe if Oliver were willing to talk to the police as well, but even if he did, it would still be without solid proof. And he wasn't sure it would be enough for anyone to go after someone as prominent as Adrian Chase. Plus, his record was clean, and he couldn't say he wasn't doing an amazing job as D.A. which just made this entire endeavor all the more difficult. But they hadn't dismissed Joanna right away and seemed to have believed her, and that was something. They'd just have to see where to go from here and what would come of it.

It was, in a way, a good thing that it had been Joanna; she was a reliable witness, not just because of her status and reputation as a lawyer but also because of who her brother had been. As much as he hated to admit it, but her being the sister of the late Danny de la Vega, a very reputable and respected firefighter who had died in the line of duty, during a vendetta against the fire department, helped the matter a lot. And SCPD would probably be more inclined to look into the possibility of the D.A. being dirty than had she been anyone else. They'd even gone so far as to put officers on duty to keep her protected. That showed how seriously they took her allegations. There was a reason why he'd taken her all the way to his old precinct instead of the closest one available. Chances were that Chase had several members of the police force in his pockets, potentially very high-ranking ones. So, they needed to tread lightly and carefully.

He'd spent most of his days trying to figure out who on the force they could trust and who he was certain was in Chase's or Adams' pockets. Laurel had told him that they'd decided for everyone to take a break until after the holidays, unless something urgent came up. Especially once Oliver had revealed what he had learned during his capture and the news had been shocking and made him agree with the conclusion his daughter and her colleagues had reached. They needed to lie low for now and come up with a new game plan. Having to go up against not only the D.A. but the mayor as well made it almost impossible to get an arrest, not without solid proof. Otherwise, it would be career suicide for whoever brought the charges up and a waste of everyone's time and resources.
