Ash wasn't actually the first person Greninja cared for. Two years before meeting Ash, he made friends with a young girl named Mary. Mary's father was cruel and abusive, but she was always kind to Greninja (Froakie at the time, obviously). Since she was too young to have her trainer's license, she couldn't capture him for herself. However, Greninja vowed to wait until she was of legal age to own Pokemon and planned to give her his Pokeball himself.
She was two days shy of her tenth birthday when her father killed her.
