For the cloud of the Lord was above the tabernacle by day, and fire was over it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel, throughout all their journeys.

The Cloud and the Fire represent God's Presence upon Israel. The Cloud is their shield during the day, and Fire as their light at night.
Day and Night there is a battle. And we shall overcome for the Lord is with us. The Cloud and the Fire also represent His Word that we need to become victorious.This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
