You slept soundly, with deep, unhindered breaths.

With deep red eyes, Alduin watched you, frowning. You had curled up onto his lap, too tired to care of your mortification that would no doubt come to play in the morn, and quietly mumbled for him to keep you under his the furs he had.

All he knew was that you had been ridiculously cold only a few hours back, the cave fire doing little to keep your body heat in. Granted, they were in the Winterhold region, so it was ass-freezing cold.

Even then, after some 6 months of traveling and tireless research from your part, you could not find a cure. However, this was the first time you voluntarily got into his space.

Sure, you were kind and friendly all in the time he'd spent with you, but you never really could seem to do anything around him without turning bright red.

And this, well, your face has been red when you'd walked over, but your eyes lidded and it seemed like you were too tired to keep a hold of yourself.

So silently, he revealed in the peace you brought, bathed in the soft scent you had and the fact you were so close to him.

Surprisingly, he'd gotten used to living as a mortal (that didn't mean he never missed his all-powerful immortal life). You helped him along, got him used to people and ushered him to be somewhat bearable.

How, he did not know.

He supposed it was because you were his mate- so small, so fragile, and yet so impactful. So happy, brimming with life and easily deflecting any sort of negativity that came your way. Something that could be ruined, something that could be taken away.

He did not like the mentioning of the last comment.

Throughout the months, he had gotten increasingly more protective, even coming as far as punching some drunk dumbass nearly to death for looking at you the wrong way.

You had yanked him off the drunken shit before he could stop his heart. Disfigure his face, oh, yes, but kill him? No. He'd die within a few years- Alduin had slammed his ribs so hard eventually the fuckface would just suffocate from his ribs trying to fix themselves.

You had given him the cold shoulder and a hard glare for the entire week following.

You did not understand.

That bastard would've caught you in an alley and would've left you dead and completely shredded of any dignity.

That's what men like that one did. That's the one thing Alduin knew.

Other men, those who looked at you like that, tried to talk to you like that; he would keep them away. You were naive. He was overprotective anyway.

There were some he could stand, such as one of your friends from the war. Ralof, was his name. Nice, Alduin supposed. The Nord had a wife and kids of his own.

Not a threat- not with his smile and his heart.

You also knew a pair of twins from Whiterun. Farkas and Vilkas.

They... He did not understand your relationship with them- why you interacted with Vilkas at all. Farkas was a very soft person, very welcoming. Someone you'd turned to before when no one else was there.

He owed that to the man, he supposed.

But Vilkas... Vilkas and you butted heads like rams, and constantly. It was on the smallest things, too.

Alduin more than once had nearly opened his mouth and shouted that sorry fucker through walls.

Ah, but of course, you would understand his short temper and weasel out of the argument. Alduin did not know how you could read him and others so easily, but when it came to those who were truly not good at heart, you were completely blind.

Once, you'd told him something on it.

Once, you'd mentioned some by the name of Mercer Frey, whose name made you spiral down in sorrow for days, and yet you never told anyone.

Never said a word.

He could not ask you for fear of that shadow coming across your face, the wounds from whatever happened still fresh. He could not- the pain of watching you clench your eyes shut and burrow your head in your arms too great.

You never made a sound when you cried.

No, it was silent.

You would stare off, tears simply dripping off your face.

In those moments, you were not beside him. You were nowhere.

You were lost in pain, engulfed by it.

And he could not help you.

He could not protect you from your past- from your own thoughts.

And he wondered what you would do if you were all alone again.

He wondered with dread.

Because he knew what you would do.

He knew what you were going to do the afternoon of the day you met him.

He knew it.

You were going to head to a mountain, find a cliff, and jump off.

Because every thought you had rung in his back of his head, like quiet whispers.

And it scared him.

Because whenever Mercer came up, he would hear nothing.

You would immediately shut down.

You would stop everything,

And you would grieve.

And you would hate.
