FLASHBACK
1226, France

Mallory's arms were held by the two guards as they led her up the steps to where she'd be hanged. As they finally arrived, she turned to
the executioner, a kind expression on her face. "I think you for your kindness, lord," She told him in a whisper, "For choosing to have me hanged rather than beheaded."

"It wasn't my choice, Your Highness, but you're welcome," He responded and Mallory frowned, wondering how else could have done it.

Her father surely wouldn't have.

Mallory suddenly froze, her eyes widening in realization.

Klaus.

She forced a smile onto her face and nodded as she walked over to the noose. "Princess Mallory Montague, you are hereby rendered guilty of murder, adultery, and witchcraft. Do you have any last words as you stand before the people of France and your God?"

"I do not," Mallory responded in a calm tone, her lips curling upwards, "Only that I hope you all burn in hell for shaming me for something I didn't do. I am not a witch nor am I an adulterer. How could I commit adultery when I'm not even married? I am only being charged with this because my father wishes to be rid of me. That is all."

In the crowds, Kol tried to push through to get to Mallory, only to have Klaus and Elijah suddenly appear. They roughly grabbed him by the arms, pulling him back.

"What are you doing?" Kol asked in a low growl, "She is being executed being of us. She saved us from being revealed as vampires and now, her father is making her pay for it. We cannot let her die."

"We must," Klaus answered softly, a guilty expression on his face, "We must or the sacrifice she made for us will be for nothing. Do you really wish Father to find us?"

"I don't care," Kol growled at Klaus as he hatefully glared at him. Kol attempted to run forward again, only to have his brothers stop him again, "No, please. I beg of you," He pleaded, genuinely beginning to cry, "I love her. I cannot let her die."

"You must," Elijah replied in a soft tone, a sympathetic look on his face.

On the platform, Mallory took deep breaths, trying to remain calm as the noose was placed around her neck. She turned her head, her eyes locking on her father, who stood on the balcony with a calm expression on his face. She closed her eyes and waited patiently for the execution to occur.

Just then, the execution kicked the stool out from under her. She gasped for breath, clutching at the noose around her neck and her legs dangled. She struggled to breathe, but within seconds, she wasn't fighting anymore. She was dead.

Kol cried out, a single tear falling down his cheek before he finally stopped fighting. He stared up at Mallory's dead body hanging from the noose, his expression becoming cold as he closed his eyes and found himself turning off his emotions.

That had been the true beginning of the way Kol Mikaelson came to be who he was known as now. It was all done to cope with the loss he endured.

PRESENT DAY
MYSTIC FALLS

It was around dawn outside. Mallory was half-asleep. She sighed, turning onto her side. She groaned, however, when she opened her eyes to see that Kol had appeared beside her. "You have no shame, do you?" She asked, still half asleep.

Kol smirked slightly, moving his face closer to hers. "When it comes to you, love?" He asked quietly, "None at all."

"What are you up to today?" Mallory questioned, raising a curious brow at him, "I suppose you have some diabolical plan to concoct."
