chapter 35: the attack

We stepped outside and I got a weird feeling washing over me. I couldn't explain it but something felt off, everything looked the same, but I felt this weight in the air. Just then my neck started to hurt and I rubbed it trying to ease the pain. It began to sting a bit more as we began walking down the street. I winced and grabbed my neck again, stopping for a moment. "Is everything ok? What's wrong with your neck?" she stopped, noticing I had paused as well and looking me over. "Im fine, my neck just hurts a bit." I said with a sour face as I rubbed it hoping the feeling would fade. "Merlin Y/n it doesn't look ok are you sure you are fine?" she asked, a bit more shocked. "What do you mean? what's wrong with it?" I asked furrowing my brows. I turned and looked at my reflection in a store window and gasped a little at the sight of it. "Holy fuck." I said lightly brushing my fingers over it. I had never seen it like this before. The night of the Yule ball it was just a dark bruise looking spot. This time it was like all the veins in the area were infected and were a dark black color. I rubbed it and poked at it freaking out for a moment. "Merlin I have no Idea what's going on." Luna walked over and looked at it closely. "It's like someone injected some sort of black liquid into your veins, but why is it only this small area of your neck?" she said, investigating the wound. "I have no clue." I said as I winced from the stinging growing worse. "Ow motherfucker holy shit." I said squeezing my eyes shut, "Y/n look!" she said shaking my arm. I looked back at it and it was spreading slowly a bit up my neck. "Ew it looks almost alive, what is this?" I said pulling at the skin on my neck. "It's like the more it hurts the more it starts to spread." I said looking over at her. She was just examining it trying to figure out what could be happening. "When did this start?" she asked looking up at me. I paused for a moment and looked at her, "I can't remember, it happened at the yule ball but it wasn't this bad or noticeable and it went away after awhile." I looked up at Luna and unintentionally I went inside her head. I caught a glimpse of a few of her memories and shook my head looking away. "Oh Merlin I'm so sorry that was an accident I wasn't even trying." I said hectically. "What are you talking about? Try what?" She asked, confused. I looked at her and realized she didn't know I was in her head a few seconds ago. "N-nothing nevermind." I said looking back in the window and looking at the veins on my neck. I felt the uneasy feeling deepen and I looked over at Luna. "Luna we should prob-" I was cut off by a scream that came from down the street, Luna and I both turned quickly and my eyes grew wide when we saw what caused it. A girl about our age was thrown and was on the ground, passerby's surrounding her, I could see her slowly getting back up and we looked through the crowd, more screams and yells started and emerging from some people were about four or five figures dressed in all black with black hooded cloaks and masks. "Oh fuck Luna are those.." "Death eaters." she stuttered out as we both stood frozen. They were making their way through people, going in and out of stores, shoving and hexing anyone in their way. "W-what do we do?" She asked, reaching out and grabbing my arm. "Run." I said she nodded and we backed away slowly, people bumping into us as they ran to hide and move out of their way. One brave man tried fighting off one of the death eaters who had their grip on a Slytherin girl. He had his wand drawn and shot out a spell but the death eater quickly blocked it and hit him with an unforgivable curse. Luna and I kept a fast pace making our way through all the people. I saw another man hit a death eater and sent it flying back, it quickly got up off its feet and hit him with the cruciatus curse as well. We were trying to get through the crowd as fast as possible, there weren't a whole lot of people here but everyone was in a chaotic state and blocking all the walkways. We continued to hear cries and pleads and the sounds of spells being fired. I saw two Death eaters exit a store that was closer to us than my liking and made their way towards our crowd. "Go Luna c'mon hurry!" I said pushing her forward and running. They passed through most of them, it looked like they were looking for someone and only paid attention to young girls. They grabbed a girl that was fifteen feet from Luna and I and I heard her scream as they looked at her and then tossed her aside. I looked at her and saw she had a Slytherin scarf and robes on. My eyes went wide when I realized they were specifically checking Slytherin girls. I looked down at my robes and felt my insides turn and my heart beat as I stared at the crest on my chest. I looked and saw a death eater getting closer to us and turned back to Luna. "Give me your scarf!" I yelled at her, "What? Right now?" she asked, confused. I nodded and grabbed it from her quickly wrapping it around my neck and over the crest on my robes. "Go there down that alley!" I yelled and we ran towards it. I turned and saw two death eaters walking towards me and I felt my heart sink. Everything stopped for a moment. Like a scene in a movie where everything slows down and your instincts either kick in or fail you. I could hear my heart thumping in my head. I raised my wand and started shooting every possible spell at the one closest to me, "Y/n what are you doing?! Come on!" I heard Luna shout. I turned to her and tossed her my bag, she caught it and I turned back to the death eaters headed my way. "Run Luna! Hurry go!" I yelled at her, she shook her head and raised her wand, "No just go I got this i'm right behind you I promise!" I yelled. I definitely did not have this, but she didn't need to put herself in danger when she isn't remotely who they are looking for. She looked at me hesitantly and I just turned back to the figures. She took off down the street towards the alley. The taller one seemed to be more focused on taking me then fighting me off, they were getting closer as the other one did as well, shoving people out of their way as I continued backing up. "Diffindo!" I yelled attacking the Death Eater I had already tried to hit multiple times. They kept blocking it "Expelliarmus!" I shouted, shooting it at them over and over again, they were some very skilled wizards whoever they were, consistently blocking every attempt. The two death eaters worked together and shoved all the people out of their ways with spells, they didn't even falter a step and seemed to know each other's every next move, my neck was in an excruciating amount of pain but was masked by my adrenaline. The taller one headed towards me, quickly I used my wand and lifted a nearby cart of books and threw it at him, without hesitation he stopped it before it hit him and tossed it off to the side. "Leave me alone I'm not who you want!" I screamed thrashing my wand left and right as I threw a multitude of spells their way. "Expulso!" I shouted at the shorter, but still large, Death Eater catching them off guard and sending them back. They lifted their wand from their place on the ground as they struggled to get up. I shot another spell their way and they blocked it. "Sectumsempra!" a man's voices yelled from behind his mask. I had never heard of this spell before and was taken off guard. Right before it reached me the taller Death eater raised his wand and shot a protection spell out at me. It blocked the other death eaters spell and I saw the taller one shoot a look at the other that was now running over to me. Why would he block it? A lot of people had scattered but I still couldn't see where the other death eaters were. "Confringo!" I shouted at the taller man that was getting closer, he blocked it with ease and continued forward towards me. I could feel the pain in my neck growing more and more as I continued on blocking their spells and shooting any I could. I ran down an alley that was opposite the one Luna went down and ran as fast as I could. I looked back and saw the two men chasing after me, I turned down behind some buildings and continued to run as fast as possible. I stopped when I was put out back into the main street of the town, I had only been here so many times, not enough to know my way around perfectly though. I sighed and clutched my neck as I felt it sharpen, It grew from an aching sting to a sharp stabbing feeling. I screamed in pain as I tried to focus on the two men. I had noticed the taller man wasn't attacking me, but just trying to get closer to me. I ignored him and focused on the other man. I pointed my wand at a trashcan and threw it at him, he ducked and raised his wand. The taller man was now a mere five feet from me and I looked up at him. Everything went into slow motion again and I could feel a stinging in my wrist, I looked down and saw the same black veins I'd seen on my neck had spread down through my arm. The man seemed to also notice and paused for a moment. I looked up at him and raised my wand "Expelliarmus!" I yelled and he blocked it with little effort once more. The other death eater came up behind him, "Crucio!" He yelled and my eyes went wide, I knew that my protection spell was not able to block this and my only option would be to try and run. The taller man shot a spell out against his own and it deflected the curse from reaching me. They exchanged a look, and I looked at the taller man. I looked at his eyes through his mask and he made eye contact with me as well, there was something so familiar about him. But I didn't have time to think because his partner was once again trying to attack me, I pointed my wand to a potted plant and threw it at his head. This time striking him and knocking him to the ground. The taller man reached forward to grab my coat, I looked over and saw a third death eater pointing at me "We found her!" they yelled then raised their wand. I figured this was it. They knocked my wand from my hand and the man clutching my robes looked at me. I kicked his shin but he didn't release his grip. I saw his eyes looking me over and I could feel my neck and arm burning, like I was being lit on fire. And he noticed it too, taken aback a bit by the sight of me. "I'm telling you, you have the wrong girl!" I shouted. The man I thought I had knocked out came walking up, "No dear you are just who we want!" he sneered at me. "Imperio!" I heard a familiar voice yell, the one man was struck and suddenly raised his wand striking the third death eater and sending them back into a wall. The man that gripped my shirt and I looked over and I smiled when I saw Remus standing with his wand out. The Death eater he made attack the other raised his wand at Remus and he deflected the spell he sent his way. While the man that had a grip on me was distracted I used my hand and sent a jab to his lower stomach and he folded slightly still not letting go. I grabbed his wand from his hand and pushed it to his throat but he was quicker and muttered a spell that made it disappear from my grasp and return to his hand. I grunted and kicked as I tried to get his grip off me. "Expelliarmus!" I heard Remus shout and it hit the man in front of me causing him to fall backwards, bringing me down with him. I quickly pushed the man back down as he tried to get up and grabbed my wand running over to Remus. The man got up and pointed his wand at us, well Remus in specific. I stepped in front of Remus and saw the Death eater hesitate. Two others emerged from the corner and were heading towards us. I felt Remus grab my hand from behind me and interlocked our fingers. I saw the death eater look in my eyes and I looked in his, I could see hesitation and guilt, I could tell whoever this man was, either knew he couldn't, or didn't want to hurt me. He circled his wand in preparation to fire a spell and I could see the light barely begin to leave his wand, then I felt my insides twisting and turning and my head spinning, It kept spinning and then it slowed down and stopped and my vision came into focus.

I looked over and saw my hand interlocked with Remus'. I looked around and saw we were on the edge of Hogsmeade. "Thank you." I said shocked, "No time hurry we need to get you back inside the school." he said and we started running. "Accio!" I said closing my eyes and extending my hand, I felt my broom hit my palm and I smiled to myself. "Hop on hurry!" I said, our hands still clasped as we stepped onto the broom and I wrapped my hands around the handle. I lifted us up and flew as fast as I knew how back to Hogwarts. I flew down to the courtyard and landed the best I could on the snow. I heard a grunt come from Remus, as I let out a wince as we toppled onto the cold ground. "Sorry I haven't perfected a landing." I said rubbing my head as he got up and held out a hand to help me up. "That's quite alright." He said as I took his hand and he helped me up. "Y/n!" I heard Luna yell and I turned and saw running towards me. "Are you ok?!" she asked out of breath. "Yes thanks to Remus here." I said smiling up at him. "You said you were right behind me! I would have helped! What happened?" she said, sputtering out so many questions. "I'm not even sure we need to get to Dumbledore immediately though." I said looking over at Remus, "Yes indeed let's hurry." and we all headed off to meet Dumbledore.
