chapter 40: new years day

I woke up and squinted as the sun blinded me from my window. I slowly sat up and looked around, I grabbed the glass of water on my nightstand and guzzled it down quickly, my throat dry and lips chapped. "Merlin what happened last night?" I said slowly standing up and walking to the bathroom. I looked in the mirror and saw my mascara smudged under my eyes and huffed, brushing my teeth. I walked out into my room and looked in my trunk for some clothes and saw the bottle half full of firewhiskey. "Oh that happened." I said sighing and putting it at the bottom. I grabbed some clean clothes and took a hot shower. I washed the nasty feeling off my face and body and scrubbed my hair. Replaying all the memories I could remember from last night as I closed my eyes and washed out the suds. I paused for a moment remembering me kissing Remus. "Oh fuck that's not good." I said as I finished rinsing out my hair and turned off the water. I got out grabbing the towel and drying my face, sighing as I wrapped it around my body. I went to the mirror and wiped the condensation from the mirror. "So you're just kissing everybody now huh?" I said laughing at myself and getting dressed. I couldn't believe my actions last night, they were so careless. And I can only imagine how Remus is feeling. I shouldn't have sprung on him like that. I should probably go talk to him about it.

I left the bathroom and looked at the time, breakfast was almost over but I could probably still make it. I slipped on my shoes and grabbed my wand, slipping on a cardigan, I used a spell and dried my hair and applied some light makeup and left the room. As I passed through the common room I looked down on the coffee table and saw the glass of orange juice, I quickly whisked it away with my wand and looked at the rug, shaking my head, disappointed in myself and exiting into the dungeons hallways. I looked around and didn't see anyone as I made my way to the dining hall. I passed a few Ravenclaws as they exited the big oak doors. Walking in I kept my gaze from the teachers table and focused on finding Luna. But I felt eyes on me and looked up and smiled at Albus who smiled back as I made my way over to Luna. Sitting down across from her I looked over to Remus. He made eye contact with me and I gave a small embarrassed smile and he did the same, not looking too bad after all we drank last night. "So how was your new years? You kinda disappeared." Luna asked sweetly as I sipped on some pumpkin juice and ate a biscuit to help with my stomach. "Yeah sorry about that I had a rough day." I smiled and then looked back at the table in the front. I spotted my dark haired professor and frowned when I remembered all he'd scorned me with. And the feeling went right back through me. The feeling I tried escaping last night that took over me. I kept my head high. I didnt want to look silly, and I certainly didnt want to be upset over a stupid boy.

"Oh well that sucks, but it was a pretty eventful day." she said laughing softly. "That it was." I said looking down as we continued eating. She told me about a dream she had and was explaining what she thought it meant. I listened along and then looked up slightly at the sweet professor who I so rudely took advantage of last night, and to what? Get over the cold and cruel man that despised me? I made eye contact with the kind man's eyes and we both smiled. I tilted my head motioning to the doors, hoping he'd understand my signal to go talk. He nodded and I turned back to Luna who had paused to look in her book about dreams to line up her ideas. "Hey Luna, I have to go do something. I'll catch you in a bit ok?" I said looking at her slowly getting up, she didn't hear me I assumed because she just hummed and kept reading intently. "Great" I said getting up and making my way down the dining hall. I watched Remus slowly start to scoot his chair out as I made my way to the door. I noticed coal eyes on me as I walked out and peaked through the door. I noticed Severus staring Remus down as he walked past him and towards the doors. He glared as he made his way through them and I made eye contact with him as the heavy doors closed slowly. I gave a sarcastic smirk and turned around as they shut fully. Snape with a stern but unmoving look. I turned to Remus and smiled fiddling with my buttons on my cardigan. "So I figured we should talk about last night. And just kind of clear the air." I said softly looking up at him. He stuffed his hands into his pockets and nodded, "Yes w-we should do that." he said laughing awkwardly. This was so weird and embarrassing I wasn't sure what to say. "I just mainly wanted to um apologize, I shouldn't have come onto you like that." I said lightly, looking to the side and not making eye contact. "Oh Y/n no I should apologize I shouldn't have put us in that position anyways." He said smiling softly. "Oh well I mean It was my idea and I made the first move so It's all on me." I said smiling and scratching the back of my neck. "No no it's not anyone's fault, it was New years and," I nodded along, "And I was upset about my guy problem," I said waving my hand in the air for emphasis. "And I too was upset about personal things." he cleared his throat. We both smiled and nodded along with each other. "So we are on the same page then?" I asked with a light chuckle. "Yes we are on the same page." He smiled down at me and I nodded. "Ok cool," I said laughing and brushing some hair from my face. "So, friends still?" I asked, shrugging my shoulders a bit, "Yes, yes of course." He smiled nodding, I reached out and gave him a quick hug to break some of the tension, he returned it and as we pulled apart smiling the doors opened and quickly from them emerged a certain tall dark clothed professor. "Lupin, not pestering this child to fetch you a bone now I hope." He drawled out, crossing his arms and staring him down as I pulled away from the hug. I gave a quick look to Snape and then to Remus, who sighed and seemed rather unaffected by his snide comment. Did Severus know about Remus? I mean why else would he make that joke. Remus flashed him a small smile, "No Severus, act-" Remus began, I assumed he was just gonna make up some excuse or respond with a comment about Snape but I cut him off. "Actually Professor Snape it's none of your business." I said smiling up at him. He can torment me and be a pain in the ass and yell all he wants but I'm not gonna let him get to me or be rude to someone as innocent as Remus. His eyes darkened and he went to snap at me but Remus just grabbed my shoulders and turned me around, "Good day Severus." He said kindly, walking with me down the hall. I turned and looked back at Snape, he had an angry look on his face and I just turned back around to hide my small frown. "I can handle him, you know." I said as Remus and I walked down the hall. "Yes I'm sure you can but it doesn't mean you have to." he said smiling down at me. I nodded in agreement and we continued down the hall. "So Snape knows about you?" I asked as we walked to his room. "Yes he does, besides you and Albus he's the only one." he sighed as we continued walking. "How did he find out?" I was not that shocked Snape knew, but I wondered why he'd keep it a secret if he hated Remus so much. "Well he's known since we were students, Sirius thought it would be fun to send him into the whomping willow and he saw a glimpse of me in my...form but James quickly got him out before he saw everything, but he saw enough." he said lowering his gaze to the ground. "Why didn't he tell anyone?" I inquired, trying to find out more of the two sided professor. "Well i'm not exactly sure why, I can only assume it's because we knew some of his secrets and he'd had a deal with Albus." I thought for a moment. Secrets? What secrets? "So when does...it, happen? And how do you control it?" I hoped I wasn't crossing any boundaries asking. "Well it's every full moon, and I take a special potion called Wolfsbane." he said quietly. "Oh yes i've heard of that, Snape was brewing it once during tutoring." I responded trying to piece things together. "Yes well Severus makes some for me from time to time." He said as we approached his room.

He led me into his classroom and I looked around, "Wow you did not change like anything." I said laughing lightly as he walked over to his desk and shuffled some papers. "Yes well I was in Hogsmeade to get some supplies but a certain lady needed my help." he said looking up at me. I smiled and pulled out my wand, "I think I can help with that." I raised my wand up and he walked over placing his hand on it and lowering it. "I don't know if that's a good idea." he said with a sarcastic tone, "What do you mean? I think I'm capable of summoning a few supplies and decorations." I said raising my wand once more. "Ok if you really think so." he said, raising his hands and backing up and returning to his desk. I raised my wand once more and swished it around in the air. I didn't even get a chance to say an incantation when exactly what I wanted appeared. I looked around at a few new books and some new supplies that appeared. I looked at my wand and then back at the supplies. "How odd." I said looking up to Remus. "Hmm?" he said looking up from his lesson plan. "I dont know it's weird, it's like i've become good at wordless magic overnight, and legilimency for that matter." I said placing my wand on the table and walking over to the supplies. "Well maybe the attack allowed you to expand your mind and focus your energy better." He said walking over and collecting some of the new materials. "It just doesn't make sense the attack had not happened yet and I went into Lunas mind." I said confused as I walked in circles around his room. "Well maybe the library has something on it." he said watching me pace around. "There was this book," I began walking over to his desk, "I saw it in Severus' room. I mean Professor Snape's room. I was there for lessons and I found this leather book that was filled with handwritten notes and observations. It was like a handmade spellbook almost." I said tapping my chin as I thought about it. He looked at me for a moment and shook his head, "Well i'm sure it was nothing." he said returning back to his things. "No, there was something interesting about it. Like I had never seen a copy before and it just gave off this...energy? I don't know I just feel like he might know something about what's in it. I mean I barely got a good look before he snatched it away." he hummed a response and shrugged his shoulders, "i don't know maybe it was his diary." I laughed and shook my head. "Maybe haha. Maybe I can conjure it." I said looking up at him. "I don't know if that's a good idea I mean what if he's using it when you do." I thought for a moment and shrugged my shoulders, "It's worth a shot." I grabbed my wand and focused my energy. But nothing happened, I tried again, picturing the object clear in my mind. I tried and tried, it was like I could feel it but someone was tugging on the other end. "Nope nothing, damn" I said resting my hand to my side. "Well you tried." he said smiling. I shook my head and grinned and made my way to his door, "Well I'm gonna go try to find it, even if that means interacting with the dungeon bat." I said, waving to him. "I don't think that's the best idea Y/n." he said, stopping me. "Like I said, I can handle him just fine." I said reassuring him and leaving before he could say anything else.
